Round 18 Match Report

Friday 12 September 2025

It has taken me a few days to write the final report for the season given the disappointment of last Saturday.

Once again it was an early start with our Women taking on St Marys in a preliminary final at the always windy Trevor Barker oval in Sandringham.  As expected, six of the eight goals were kicked at the northern end of the ground to which the wind was blowing.  In fact, it was the two goals that St Mary’s were able to kick into the wind early in the second quarter that probably decided the game.

Our girls tried their hearts out all day.  Trailing by 19 points at three quarter time, the game was played exclusively in our forward line in the last quarter.  We kicked 2.3 while keeping St Marys scoreless, falling short by just four points.

And so ended a fine season for the Women.  The team bounced back strongly after a disrupted 2024 season, and coach Nick Hooper can take great credit for that.  Thanks and congratulations to Nick, John Sandy, and Tom Oliver for coaching the team, and to the players for their efforts across the season.

In their final game for the season the Reserves recorded a thirteen-point win in a low scoring game against Williamstown.  It represented just reward for a young side that stuck to the task over the journey.  It is never easy coaching a reserves side, so a big thank you to Steve Warr, Caine Hillier, and Sam Boyce for their efforts.

The Seniors then took the field with one simple message – win and you’re in, lose and you’re out.

The game was close until half-time, but a six-goal blitz in the third quarter by Williamstown put paid to our chances.  It was a disappointing result, but there could be no excuses – the opposition were simply too good on the day.

The loss meant we finished the season in sixth place with ten wins, slightly more than last year.   B grade is a tough, even competition, which is fantastic.  We have shown we can match it with the best, but have also seen that we need to improve to take the next step.  A big thank you to Codge, Hamish and Harty for your efforts throughout the year.

Finally, I want to thank all the supporters again for getting out on Saturday to cheer-on both the women’s and the men’s teams.  It created a great atmosphere and we would have loved a different result to thank our supporters, but it wasn’t to be.

This will be the last weekly newsletter for a while.  I will be back in touch and update you as as we approach the pre-season in November.  Until then,

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Williamstown

Our Round 18 clash and final game of the home and away season came with great reward attached: win, and we’d play finals. Unfortunately, we possibly put together our poorest performance of the past five weeks, and Williamstown deservedly took the points. I don’t want to take anything away from them they beat us in all facets of the game and, on their season’s form, are unlucky not to be playing finals themselves in 2025.

The first half was a genuine contest. In the opening quarter, Williamstown had the advantage of the breeze heading to the scoreboard end, but we held them in check. We also had multiple early chances to apply scoreboard pressure but missed opportunities in front of goal cost us. The second term was disappointing as we failed to make use of the wind, while Williamstown managed to score against it. We gave them too much corridor access, which opened up space for their forwards and put our defence under pressure.

The third quarter proved decisive. We allowed Williamstown to kick six goals while we failed to register a major. Our forward structure broke down, and their rebound was too easy, giving them quality inside 50 entries. At three-quarter time we moved magnets around to try and find a spark, but by then the momentum was firmly with Williamstown. For the first time in five weeks, our energy levels dropped, we missed tackles, turned the ball over under little pressure, and couldn’t wrestle back control. A few of our boys were clearly banged up, but ultimately, we had no answers to their dominance.

It was a tough way to finish, but I want to make it clear the boys commitment and desire to reach finals was unquestionable. We simply fell short against a stronger side on the day.

Now, we all need to refresh before reconvening in a couple of weeks to review the season. If finals is our goal in 2026, every one of us, players and coaches must find improvement.

On behalf of the playing group, coaches, and staff, thank you to all our members and supporters for being with us throughout 2025. Your support means everything, and we are determined to repay it by getting Old Camberwell back into finals contention.
