Round 7 Match Report

Friday 30 May 2025

Not a great day result wise for the club on the weekend – four teams played, and four losses recorded.  Our women recorded a win as South Melbourne had to forfeit the game.

As is the case more often than not, a howling wind was blowing down the ground at Glen Huntly Park, leading to a tough day against Old Caulfield.  The reserves were jumped early, and never recovered, eventually losing by 29 points.  The boys fought hard considering the number of players that were unavailable, either through injury or promotion to the seniors.

Similarly, the seniors were outplayed by Old Caulfield on the day and went down by 26 points.  We were well beaten around the contest, and when we did win the ball, turned it over too regularly, so there is plenty to work on to get our season back on track.

The Under 19’s also had a tough day, losing to Parkdale by 63 points, and the Thirds lost a tight game to Old Geelong by 11 points.

On Saturday the men’s senior teams host Old Geelong.  We have been involved in several tight battles with them over the last few years, but have been unable to get over the line.  Time to change that.  By contrast, the ressies have had a couple of good wins over Old Geelong and will be looking to continue that form.  Once again we are looking forward to a big crowd to support the boys at home on Saturday.

The Under 19’s travel to Old Haileybury for a 9.20am game, the Thirds are at Ajax at 10.00am, and, as at the time if writing, the women’s fixture has yet to be released.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Caulfield

The bottom line to winning games at Caulfield’s home ground is your ability to use the breeze and defend when they have the breeze.

We had the breeze in the 1st qtr and failed to use it to our advantage. Caulfield put two behind the ball and we evened up by one, pushing Ben Hart forward from defence. We scored 2:3 in the qtr and allowed Caulfield 5 shots on goal for 1:4. The lack of scoring with breeze was going to make it a challenging 2nd qtr.

In the 2nd qtr we applied the same strategy as Caulfield din in the first by dropping two behind the ball. We did slow the game down and controlled the ball for the first part of the qtr. Unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain the pressure and allowed Caulfield to hit the scoreboard. Going in at half time 11 points down was a positive result considering Caulfield’s dominance in the back half of the second qtr.

We failed to utilise the 5 goal breeze in the 3rd qtr. Going into the ¾ time break 8 points down we knew was going to put us under pressure in the last. The boys gave it their all in the last. We couldn’t question our effort in the contest, and we had opportunities against the wind to score kicking 3:1. Josh Blew played a defensive forward role and was rewarded for his efforts with 2 goals. Lachie Powell was outstanding down back, intercept marks and his use of the ball under pressure easily had him as our best for the day.

The B grade competition is tight, and we need to win games at home to keep in touch with the leaders. This week against Old Geelong is an important game to keep us on track before the bye round.
