Round 6 Match Report

Friday 23 May 2025

Before I report on the football from the weekend, a couple of things to mention.  Firstly, a big congratulations to our Treasurer, Alex Vickery, who, mainly through the hard work of his lovely wife Cara, welcomed their son Charlie into the world last week.  Well done team!

Secondly, one of the club’s favourite cult heroes, Pei Hua, suffered a very nasty ankle/lower leg injury at the Thirds game at Old Scotch on Saturday morning.  Our trainer, Nick Beltrami, did a fantastic job of diagnosing the injury and looking after Pei.  After waiting 35 minutes for the ambulance, Peter Everett, the father of one of our players, Stephen, drove Pei to hospital where Stephen stayed with Pei until his mother arrived.  When I thanked Peter for driving Pei to hospital, he said “part of being involved in a great community club.”   Pei has also messaged the committee to say he is doing well and to thank everyone for their support and messages.  “It has meant quite a lot.”  I wanted to thank everybody for their efforts – we are lucky to be part of such a caring community.

On field, things were not quite so positive.  The Thirds were our only successful team, winning by 35 points.  I did watch some of this game and admire the boys’ spirit and some of the skills on display.

The Seniors and Reserves both suffered losses, by 29 and 41 points respectively.  In slippery conditions it would be fair to say both teams were outplayed and beaten by a better side.  As we know, if you are 5% off at this level you will find it hard to win.

As well as Nick Latsas playing his 200th game for the club, Harrison Kimmittplayed his 50th game for the club in the ressies on Saturday.  Well done Kimmo, you continue to work hard on your game and perform at a high-level week after week,

The Women’s team were beaten by eight points, 1.8 to 1.0, with Mazenod having more of the play, but kicking inaccurately.  And to round things out the Under 19’s lost by 85 points to Williamstown, although showed a bit by kicking three goals in the last quarter.

On Saturday men’s senior teams travel Glen Huntly Park to take on Old Caulfield in what promises to be another tough game.  The under 19’s host Parkdale at 11.30, and the Thirds host Old Geelong at 2.00pm.  At the time of writing the women’s fixture has yet to be released.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Old Melburnians

First week we had challenging conditions weather wise.

OM’s started with the wind and took full advantage of some poor decision making and skill execution by our boys. Their pressure was up, and we turned the ball over in dangerous areas which allowed OM’s to hit the scoreboard. We did wrestle back some control in the back half of the first qtr.

OM’s controlled the stoppages and won the territory battle, this put our defence under pressure. We gave away two 50 mtr penalties in the 2nd qtr against the win that resulted in goals to OM’s. So far this season we have controlled our emotions and avoided undisciplined acts and just concentrated on the next contest. This is something we need to get out of our game.

In the 3rd qtr goals to Liam Thomas and Josh Blew got us back to within 10 points. Our ability to control the ball and win the centre clearance battle, got the ball going forward to put pressure on OM’s defence. Late goals to OM’s gave them another sizable lead at ¾ time.

OM’s core group of senior players have plenty of Premier Division experience. They were clean around the contest, spread well from stoppages, and took full advantage from our turnovers. Looking at the team stats we were well beaten at stoppages, contested possessions, loose ball gets and inside 50’s. Saying this I feel we can learn from it, clean up a few areas, and this will keep us in games.
