Round 3 Match Report

Thursday 01 May 2025

It proved to be a tough day for Old Camberwell on Saturday, with just two of our five teams emerging victorious.

The day got off to a good start with our women recording their third straight victory, this week accounting for Elsternwick by 17 points.  The women are playing great footy, and another victory this week would see them in line for promotion to Division 2.

The reserves followed and held on for a gritty five-point win over Old Carey.  In a low scoring affair, our boys managed to kick the only goal of the final quarter.  Credit to Steve Warr and his assistant coaches for getting the best out of this young side in what is proving to be a very competitive division.

Unfortunately the seniors were unable to follow suit.  In a high standard game, we were within a goal with six minutes left to play, but three late goals to Old Carey saw the margin blow-out to 24 points.  To be fair, Old Carey had 32 scoring shots to 18, so were clearly the better side on the day.  If any team is not quite at its best on a given day, beware, it will be difficult to win!

Saturday saw both the Under 19’s and our Third XVIII playing twilight games, with both suffering large losses.  The Under 19’s have gone up a grade this year, and Division 1 is tough, while the Thirds were up against their nemesis, Old Xavs, who have not lost a game in two years.

This week the men’s senior teams travel to the picturesque Brunswick Street Oval to take on Fitzroy, the women play Canterbury at Canterbury Sports Ground, the Under 19’s host Old Xaverians and the Thirds play Masala also at GBO.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and all those that have joined the Patrons Club or signed up as members.  Your support is greatly appreciated, and ensures the club is able to support its players to the best of our ability.  If you have not yet signed up, we would love to have you on board, we need as much support as we can get!

Seniors vs Carey

Really good game early vs Old Carey. Tight contest with both teams having good passages of play and the intensity around the ball was high. In every game its important to win the contested ball inside. Early in the game we won our share of contested ball. At times we let the ball get outside the contest too easily. I was impressive with Old Carey’s ability to get the ball from inside to outside. When the ball got outside, we were slow to react and apply pressure, their leg speed through the midfield and off HBack gave them plenty of supply inside their forward 50. We were a bit off with our pressure around the contest, plenty of missed tackles which was our strength in the early games. Our turnovers by foot under no pressure is something we need to go to work on.

We were still very much in the game at ¾ time even though I thought we hadn’t played to the level we expect. We moved Ben Hart forward with instant success, Ben kicked two early goals in the last. Again, our intensity around the ball dropped off allowing Old Carey to control the footy and give their forwards plenty of supply. Around the 15 minute mark of the last they took control and hit the scoreboard with consecutive goals.

We were pleased with some of our match ups, they also did their homework on our prime movers from the week before which is a credit to their coaches. It’s another good reminder to our players that if you’re off a little in B grade you will get punished on the scoreboard.

Liam Thomas was good again up forward. Caleb Finlayson was lively in the forward half, Josh Holding and Will Day played good defensive roles. Lachie Harker worked through a heavy tag and that will be great for his development. Garnet Brennanwas good in the ruck and took contested marks around the ground.

The main take away from the game is we need to be switched on from the first bounce. Players agreed during the pre game we seemed a bit flat and that something we need to improve. We can’t afford to be 10% off in our pressure. This week we took a lot from the game and now we need to learn from the loss.
