Seniors vs Williamstown
Cold and blustery winter day down near Williamstown beach. We kicked with the wind in the first qtr. Our first 4 entries inside our F50 were to the dead pocket and Williamstown scrapped to keep the ball there. We started to shift the ball from half back to the attacking side of the ground and instantly started having shots on goal. Our defence held up well behind the ball and kept rebounding the ball forward. Unfortunately, we lost Lachie Powell for the day in the 1st qtr with a hamstring strain. We had 13 shots on goal for 5:5 and 3 out on the full. The pressure at the contest was great, and we got the advantage winning a few 50/50 balls. We allowed a late goal into the breeze to Williamstown, but we held a 28 point lead at the first break. We knew the 2nd qtr was going to be a qtr where we need to defend to the dead side of the ground. Ben Hart was superb behind the ball intercepting Williamstown’s long balls inside their forward 50. Jack Spalding was also playing a great intercepting role but rolled his ankle in the 2nd and took no further part in the game. Again, our contest work inside was first rate and we held Williamstown to 1:1 with the breeze and we kicked one into the breeze. At half time we had a 27 point lead and looking forward to stretching the lead in the 3rd with the breeze. We need to address our 2nd halves going all the way back to the last half of season 2024. We move away from what has got us in a commanding position. We started to get forward of the ball, allow the ball out of the contest too easy. Early again in the 3rdwe attacked from the wrong side of the ground, this is really disappointing seeing we’d already had a qtr with the breeze. To Williamstown credit the kept the ball in the dead pocket and we failed to shift it back inside to attack from the scoring side. We had too many shots from difficult positions, missed set shots, and the game became messy. We kicked 1:4 and two out of bounds, we also allowed Williamstown to kick 2 goals. I felt this lead was going to be hard to defend, especially with Williamstown going with the breeze. Williamstown got on the scoreboard with back to back goals and that gave them a spark. We did defend the D50 but we lost our shape ahead of the ball. As a group we need to drill down on our 2nd halves in games. The football we can play will beat all teams in B grade, but we need to do it for longer. We all have questioned is it our fitness, or is it mental? As coaches we need to come up with a strategy to get the playing group refocused on what we did well in first half and what we need to continue in the 2nd halves.
