Round 8 Match Report

Thursday 05 June 2025

The sun shone brightly on Saturday, but it must have got into the eyes of a few of our players!  It was a disappointing day with only one of our five sides tasting victory.

Our Women literally kicked the dew off the grass with an 8.00am game at Elsternwick, and recorded an emphatic 57 to 0 win.  It was a memorable match for 50-gamer Maclyn Matheson, who starred with 3 goals.  Congratulations on reaching that milestone Maclyn, we look forward to many more great games to come.

The Under 19’s were competitive for a half against third placed Old Haileybury before being outplayed to lose by eight goals.  Pleasingly, the boys kicked ten goals for the game, including four in the last quarter, which should give them some confidence for the upcoming games.

Our Third XVIII went down by three goals against Ajax in a hard fought clash, but remain in third place on the ladder.  In what seems to be a common theme in the VAFA this year, it is a very even competition with only one game separating third and eighth.

The Reserves lost to Old Geelong by 18 points in a low scoring affair, with a total of eight goals for the game.  Mounting injuries and unavailabilities in both the seniors and reserves is affecting our performance, but the effort shown by the boys cannot be questioned.

A blistering opening ten minutes by the Seniors saw us kick the first three goals of the game, but beyond that point Old Geelong dominated, running away to win by 45 points.  Now sitting at 4 wins and 4 losses, our next game at Williamstown is crucial in keeping our finals aspirations alive.

The long weekend sees a bye for all teams, which will be a welcome opportunity to reset and comeback refreshed and re-energised.  Next week the seniors have a tricky assignment out at Williamstown, the women host Ormond, and the Thirds and Under 19 fixtures have not yet been posted.

In my next update I will look to provide dates for our Wellsmen lunches which will no doubt be big days for the club again.

Enjoy the week off, and good luck to our teams next week.

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Old Geelong

We started the game well, putting pressure on OG and having multiple inside 50 entries. Our midfield was on top, centre clearances 6-0 for the qtr. Our tackling numbers were high, we had good run and carry. If we were more accurate, we could have easily been in front by 4 goals at the first break.

In the 2nd qtr we allowed OG to hit the scoreboard mainly from our turnovers.  Our pressure dropped away, and we were poor with our decision making with ball in hand. We need to be more consistent with the pressure we apply to the opposition. We can’t afford to have 10 min lapses and allow the opposition to control the game.

After half time our pressure dropped right away and allowed OG uncontested possessions. OG were accurate in front of goal taking full advantage of their ability to mark inside their F50. The inside 50 count and clearance count were similar, OG used the ball better when they won it at the source.

We showed in the first qtr we have the ability and game style to match most teams. The biggest challenge is to maintain it for 4 qtrs. After the bye weekend we could potentially have 5 senior players back from injury or overseas.
