Round 10 Match Report

Friday 27 June 2025

It was a beautiful day for football on Saturday, and great to see a big crowd down at GBO to cheer the teams on.  The players certainly notice the difference with a bit of encouragement spurring them on.

The reserves kicked off proceedings on the bottom oval.  A scintillating opening quarter set-up a comfortable 36-point victory, with the highlight being nine goals from Caine Hillier in his retirement game.  Caine has now kicked 495 goals, so despite being chaired off, it will be interesting to see whether he can resist the temptation to reach the magical 500.  Whatever may lie ahead, it is a great opportunity to recognise Caine’s wonderful contribution to Old Camberwell, both on and off the field.  Along with his wonderful wife Rosie, Caine has been involved in the club for many years, and is greatly respected by all those he has been associated with.  This was reflected in the number of former teammates who came down on Saturday to celebrate his last game.  Well done “Caino”.

The seniors then took the field, and after a tight first half, drew away to win by 31 points.  While not at our best, it was a badly needed win, and sets us up for a big game against Old Trinity this week.

A depleted women’s side took on St Marys on the top oval.  16 unavailable players left a bench of one – not ideal when you are coming up against another side that had only lost one game.  St Marys ultimately ran out winners by 30 points, but we remain confident that we will be very competitive if we get another crack at them during finals.

In a familiar story, the Under 19’s were very competitive against University Blues until three quarter time, but three quick goals to our opponents at the start of the last put the result beyond doubt.

The Thirds won an “8 point” game against Masala, cementing our place in the top four.  33 scoring shots to 16 meant the final margin of 31 points did not truly reflect our dominance, but we will definitely take the win.

This week the seniors and reserves travel to Trinity in the battle for the “Old Mitre Cup”, the women play at Prahran at 10.00am, the Under 19’s are at GBO against Beaumaris at 11.30am, and the Thirds host Old Xavs at 2.00pm.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Hampton

Great to get back on the winners list. The focus this week was to have a consistent 4 qtr effort, and to keep the energy up after half time. Our 2nd halves have been an issue we’ve been working on. The theme was to address the next qtr at every break, and what we need to do for the next 30 minutes.

We started the game slowly, but we could feel the energy up right across the ground. Again, our stoppage work started to get us going forward. Some of Ruben Hopkins tap work was first rate. Jimmy Allen and Ben Carlisle started to get on top of their direct opponents and win contested ball at the stoppages. We still made fundamental ball handling mistakes and turned it over in dangerous parts of the ground. We gave Hampton the ball back and they made us pay on the scoreboard. Josh Holding and Josh Gale provided good run off half back in the first half. We moved Caleb Finlayson deeper forward as a small target which worked well. Caleb used the space inside the forward 50 and got on the end of some good passages of play.

At half time the boys focused on the first 5 minutes of the 3rd qtr to ensure we got off to a good start. The coaches felt there was a real desire in the group to improve our 2nd half performances. Our ability to stick to the plan and apply pressure at the contest was first rate. We did still have a few lapses with our decision making but nothing that can’t be rectified for this weeks game. Our forwards pushed higher up the ground and applied pressure to help turn the ball over and give us scoring opportunities. Ben Carlisle with 16 tackles and to shut down one of Hamptons prime moves was outstanding on the day. James Harker’s move to CHB was encouraging for the team, James has also shown he can play through the midfield as well.

It’s the first time in awhile since we’ve had 15 scoring shots in the 2nd half of a game. This must be the benchmark going forward. We need to give our forwards the supply to hit the scoreboard. We felt our forward 50 entries when going to the right spots gave our forwards scoring opportunities. Looking at our vision we still felt we went a bit shallow with our forward entries at times. This will be one of the focuses this week.
