Round 13 Match Report

Wednesday 30 July 2025

The weather was cold and miserable, and the results matched the weather on the weekend.

The high point was a 16-point victory by the Seniors against Fitzroy.  Needing a win to remain in the hunt for the top four, we were in control for most of the game.  Three last quarter goals by Fitzroy made the result look closer than it actually was.

After an impressive first half, the Reserves went down by five goals against the third placed Fitzroy.  It was a shame we couldn’t snare a win for milestone players Louis Campbell (150 games) and Charles Robertson (50 games).  Louis has been a wonderful servant of the club, playing very solid football for both the seniors and reserves over many years.  His production company, Berg Productions, has also been a great supporter of the club over that time.  Congratulations Louis, not many players reach the 150 games mark.  In contrast, Charles joined the Club from the school three years ago, starting in the Under 19’s and graduating to the reserves and then the Firsts earlier this year.  We expect Charles’ football will continue to develop at a rapid rate – he is one of a number of excellent young players who will form the backbone of the club over the coming years.  Well done Charles.

The Under 19’s went down by 54 points against Old Trinity, but fought the game out well.  A feature was the very accurate kicking for goal – 11 goals 2 behinds, being 9 goals straight at three quarter time.

Our Women’s team continues to be affected by injuries and players’ overseas travel, and this contributed to a 49-point loss to Albert Park.  As I understand we have some key players returning this week for our very important clash with Mazenod, who sit just below us on the ladder.

The Thirds lost to Old Geelong by 17 points in a close one, after being just one point behind at three quarter time.  The week prior (when all other teams had a bye), the Thirds recorded a 20- point win against Glen Eira, with the much-loved Matt Cottrell kicking four goals for the game.

There is some serious football to be played this weekend.  The seniors and reserves tackle ladder leaders and arch-rivals Old Ivanhoe at Chelsworth Park, in what shapes as a very important game for the boys.  Our women, sitting third on the ladder, travel to fourth placed Mazenod, where a win will go a long way towards cementing a finals berth.  The Thirds play Fitzroy at GBO at 2.00pm in a must win game, while the Under 19’s host Old Melburnians at 11.30am.

Just a reminder of the Wellsmen Lunch to be held on 6th August.  It promises to be another great day - a chance to catch-up with old friends and reminisce about how much better a player you have become as the years pass.  Tickets can be purchased through the OCGAFC website.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Fitzroy

Coming out of the double bye we needed to bring the intensity early in the game. It’s always been the team that hits the ground running early after the bye weekends usually get a jump on the opposition. The big focus before the game was our ability to apply pressure at the contest, also we wanted to win the ball back from the opposition in our forward half. In the first qtr we won the ball back off the opposition inside our forward half 8 times and 6 resulted in shots on goal. We scored 4 : 1 and one out on the full.

We controlled the game in the 2nd, but skill errors cost us, and Fitzroy got more inside 50’s. They missed some set shots and defensively we switched off for short periods. This is another area we need to improve, our ability to stay switched on. We have worked on switching our mindset from offence to defence quicker when the ball turns over.

The 3rd was our most dominate qtr for the game. We had multiple quality inside 50 entries which I felt we didn’t take full advantage of only scoring 4 : 1. It was a qtr where our pressure was at it highest. Tackling pressure was up, 4 great smothers in the qtr showed our intent to win the ball back. If I was to identify an area to improve is our tackling effectiveness. The intent to tackle was high but far too many missed tackles. This is a focus area for this week.

We got out to a 40 point lead but we failed to keep the pressure up all the way to the end. We allowed Fitzroy to kick the last 3 goals of the game which was disappointing. We reviewed the last 3 goals they kicked on Tuesday night and have identified what we need to work on. We need to shut down the game if opposition team kick unanswered goals. To be 7 and 6 after 13 rounds keeps us in the hunt. The top 4 is open and our destiny is in our own hands. We need to beat those team around us on the ladder, if we can achieve that we play finals.

Again, Jimmy Allen was outstanding not only with his contest ball winning but also his leadership on the ground. Ben Carlisle played his best game for the club, Lachie O’Neill was solid across half back and it’s great to have Tom Oliver back. Tom only knows one way to play and its high intensity, he’s never out of the contest.
