Round 11 Match Report

Friday 04 July 2025

In football, and life in general, you win some and you lose some.  And on Saturday, we lost them all.  That is all except our women’s team who won on forfeit.

After negotiating  the Bulleen Road traffic chaos we were greeted by a sunny day with little wind once we arrived at the Trinity Sportsfields.  A strong second quarter saw our reserves right in the game at half time, but Trinity ran away in the second half to record a 40 point win.

The First XVIII then took the field, and were quickly exposed by the slick ball movement and running power of the opposition.  An improved second quarter meant we were in the game at half-time, but four goals to nothing meant the game was over by three quarter time.  Six goals in the last salvaged some pride and reduced the margin to 30 points.  It was a good lesson to show where we need to get to to be competitive with the best teams in the competition.  Unfortunately we could not celebrate a win with Liam Thomas in his 50th game for the club.  LT is a tower of strength up forward, regularly battling two or three opponents in the contest, and still coming up trumps.  Liam is one of the premier forwards in the competition, and is emerging as a future leader of the club.  Well done LT, and keep up the good work.

The Under 19’s suffered a big loss to ladder leaders Beaumaris – we weren’t the first and won’t be the last team to experience that.  Similarly, the Third XVIII were spanked by Old Xaverians who also sit on top of the ladder.  We do, however, remain in third position on the ladder.

This week the seniors and reserves and the Under 19’s travel to Old Carey, the women play Wattle Park at Bennettswood at 9.20am, and the Thirds host Old Scotch at 11.30am.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Old Trinity

The game started with Trinity having a spare defender from the first bounce. We kept our spare but with minimal impact, so we decided to adjust. We sent a wing forward and rolled a half back around to the wing role. This allowed us to get inside 50 entries, but they were too shallow. We’ve had a focus in recent weeks getting deeper entries, still a work in progress. Trinity created good run off their half back line and generated quality inside 50’s for their forwards. We needed to limit their uncontested marks, but unfortunately their work rate was far superior to ours in the 1st qtr.

The game continued to be played with Trinity controlling the ball. We had passages of play that challenged Trinity’s defence, but the final kick inside 50 failed to hit the target. The backline held up as best they could. Lachie McGowan at full back took some timely intercept marks. Tom Oliver in his first game back this year continued to rebound the ball. Tom’s run out of defence was a positive on the day.

Trinity showed us the work rate required at this level. We can challenge these top teams with our ball movement, but it needs to be for longer during games. Again, our fitness level was exposed, and we were unable to press up on Trinity to shut down their uncontested marks. We continued to keep fighting the game out in the last qtr with a 6 goal qtr. We need to play with this type of freedom at the start of the game. We took the option to switch play and challenge Trinity with our ball movement. We held up to their pressure at the stoppages and got good fwd 50 entries.

If we look at the match day stats, we had our share of the ball. Scores from stoppages hurt us (Trinity 5:4), and the uncontested mark count was too far in Trinity’s favour (+25). We won the stoppage clearance count (+14), and our contested ball count was only down by 3. This tells the coaches we need to clean up a couple of areas if we want to challenge the top teams in B grade.
