Round 15 Match Report

Thursday 14 August 2025

Saturday’s activities kicked off with the Third XVIII taking on Old Xavs at Chelsworth Park. It is always a difficult task against Old Xavs, and this game proved no exception, with the boys going down by 75 points.  This brought the season to a close for the Thirds, who finished fifth on the ladder – a commendable effort given the difficulties faced in putting a side on the park each week.  A big thank you to our coach Harley Beechey, his assistant Dom Rosetti, and Max Kearsley for all their dedication and hard work in making the season so enjoyable for all involved.

The Under 19’s had a forgettable day recording a substantial loss against second placed Parkdale Vultures.  The Unders finish their season this week with a winnable game against Uni Blues; let’s finish the season off on a high note.

The Women had a 43-point win against South Melbourne as they tune up for finals football.  The return of some key players certainly helped the team play some exciting football again.

The Ressies returned to the winners list after a four-match losing streak, comfortably accounting for Old Melburnians by 56 points.  Lachie Ross played his 50th game for the club on Saturday, celebrating the occasion with three goals.  Lachie has speed, composure and footy smarts, and we look forward to him playing plenty of senior footy for the club over the coming years.  Well done Lachie.

The Seniors played some very slick football on the weekend in knocking over Old Melburnians by 71 points.  This was an important game and keeps the season alive for us in what is an incredibly tight competition.

This week the Seniors and Reserves take on Old Caulfield at GBO, the Women play at North Brunswick in a 4.20pm twilight game, and the Under 19’s finish their season with a 9.20am home game against Uni Blues.

We are expecting a big crowd at GBO on Saturday for what will be a finals-like game.  We already have a head start with the Wellsmen Lunch to be held on the day, and there are still a handful of tickets available if you want to join us.  If you unable to get down to the ground on Saturday, the game will be Live streamed on the VAFA website, so be sure to tune in.

Go Wellers!

President

Seniors vs Old Melburnians

We went into this week’s game focused on continuing our strong forward half pressure, aiming to force turnovers deep in our attacking zone. The boys delivered, our pressure around the contest was high in the first half and lifted to an even higher level after the break.

Old Melburnians dropped numbers behind the ball in the second quarter, forcing us to be patient and selective with our forward 50 entries. That patience paid off, with the team recording 17 marks inside 50, our best tally for the season.

After half-time, we took control at the centre clearances, producing a string of fast breaks straight out the front of the contest. Every midfielder played their part, with Dave McColl and Jimmy Allen leading from the front. Up forward, Josh Blew played a dynamic role as a high half forward, adding genuine leg speed around stoppages and pushing hard into attack, earning himself four shots on goal.

Down back, our defenders were again rock solid, setting up behind the ball and using our spare to great effect. The run and carry from our back half was a standout feature, with 67 intercept possessions and 101 uncontested marks for the match. These numbers show that when we won it back, we kept it, made smart decisions, and controlled the tempo.

We now turn our attention to another big test this week against Caulfield — quality opposition we need to beat to keep our finals hopes alive
