Round 14 Match Report

Wednesday 06 August 2025

Saturday was a beautiful day for football; the sun was shining and there was little wind.

The day started well with the Women returning to the winners list with a 22-point victory over Mazenod, which included keeping the opposition scoreless.  With two games to go, the women are now guaranteed a finals berth, so have the opportunity to fine-tune their game over the next two weeks.

The Under 19’s were first to play at GBO and recorded an impressive 46 point win against second placed Old Melburnians.  A nine goal to nil second half set-up the win – great reward for the boys who have toiled away for many weeks without scoreboard success.

The Thirds followed but were trounced by the second placed Fitzroy.  The weight of injuries and player unavailabilities finally overwhelmed the boys – the end of the season can’t come soon enough.  The one highlight was Zac Herbstreit reaching his 100th game for the club.  Zac has been a great contributor for many years, playing across all grades over the journey – well done Zac.

At Chelsworth Park the Reserves battled manfully all day, having almost the same number of scoring shots as Old Ivanhoe.  Eventually they went down by 36 points, but not before winning the final quarter.

The Seniors then took on top-placed Old Ivanhoe in what turned out to be an intense, high pressure, finals-like game.  The margin rarely exceeded two goals, but despite having several chances, we could not bridge the gap, finally falling by 8 points.  Our effort could not be questioned, and the coach’s post-game message was: play at that level and we win most games.  We congratulate Caleb Finlaysonon playing his 50th game for the club.  A quiet achiever, Caleb has blossomed into an extremely valuable Old Camberwell player – the combination of his speed and vertical leap making him a very difficult match-up for opposition teams.

This week the seniors and reserves take on Old Melburnians at GBO in must win games.  The women play at South Melbourne at 11.30am, the Under 19’s play Parkdale away at 11.30am, and the Third XVIII take on Old Xavs at Stradbroke Park at 9.20am in what is there final game of the year.  We are looking forward to a big GBO crowd to cheer the boys home.

The Wellsmen Lunch to be held on 6 August is filling quickly.  It promises to be another great day, so get your tickets quickly.  Tickets can be purchased through the OCGAFC website.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Go Wellers!

President

Seniors vs Old Ivanhoe

The first ten minutes would set the tone for the day. Old Ivanhoe brought finals like pressure early. However, it took us a little while to fully settle into the game, and Old Ivanhoe capitalised, getting out to a lead of over 20 points midway through the first half.

What was pleasing, though, was our ability to respond. We shifted the momentum in the second quarter, and by half-time, we had clawed our way back to within 3 points. That stretch showed the belief and resilience within the group - an ability to steady, reset, and swing the contest back our way.

The third quarter was our best. We created six quality shots on goal through strong forward-half pressure and composed ball movement, but unfortunately, the scoreboard didn’t reflect our dominance. We returned 1.5, with three shots hitting the post. It's an area we’ll continue to work on - capitalising when we have the game on our terms.
Defensively, the backline stood up under repeated pressure, particularly late in the third and into the last. They absorbed multiple inside 50s and kept us in the game with disciplined positioning and commitment to contest.
Although the result didn’t fall our way, there’s plenty to take away from the game. The most pleasing aspect was our ability to shift the momentum and play our brand of football against one of the top sides. It reinforces that we belong at this level and can match it with the best. We leave disappointed with the loss but confident in the direction we’re heading.

With four rounds to go, the message is clear - every contest matters. The challenge now is to turn effort into consistent four-quarter performance.
