Round 2 Match Report

Thursday 17 April 2025

The Indian Summer continued last weekend, with players taking the field in 31-degree heat.
Our women kicked the day off, taking on Albert Park (aka the Irish Backpackers) at Ian Johnston Oval in St Kilda.  After a relatively even first half, three goals to one in the third quarter broke the game open, with the women eventually running out winners by 23 points.

The Under 19’s took on Oakleigh at GBO in what turned out to be a very entertaining game.  After trailing by a point at three quarter time, a six-goal final term led to a 16-point win for the boys, getting them on the board for the year.

Playing at GBO at the same time, the Third XVIII couldn’t get over the line, going down to Ajax by 34 points.  A game against top-side Old Xavs awaits.

The seniors and reserves travelled to Hampton, with both sides having comfortable wins.  The reserves played some excellent football, winning by 107 points, while the seniors recorded their highest ever score in B grade (27.15.177) and their greatest winning margin in B grade (154 points).  A great start to the year for the team, who are responding well to new coach Neil “Codge” Connell.

After two rounds of footy, we roll into a bye over the Easter weekend, with games returning on Saturday 26 April.  The senior men’s teams return to GBO to take on Old Carey in what shapes as tough games given their solid start to the year.  The women will look to consolidate their great start to the year when they travel to Elsternwick for a 9.20 game, while the Thirds face Old Xaverians away at 4.45pm.  At this stage the Under 19’s are scheduled to play at Beaumaris in a 7.00pm game.

I want to draw your attention to the upcoming Wellsmen Golf Day, which will be held at Kew GC on Friday 2 May.  As always, it promises to be a “ball burster” of an event, with heaps of fun thrown in amongst some healthy competition.  The Wellsmen are fantastic contributors to the footy club, so if you would like to join us, details of the day can be found on the footy club website, or you can contact Alex “The Prez” Dance ( afb.dance@gmail.com).

Enjoy your Easter break, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible down at GBO on Saturday week.

Seniors vs Hampton

Round 2 we travelled to Hampton to take on newly promoted team from C Grade in Hampton Rovers. Another hot day in Melbourne so we needed to play tempo footy at times to preserve some energy to run out quarters.

The first quarter started with Hampton pushing numbers high up the ground to stoppages and to congest the game. We fell into some messy footy early with a lot of numbers around the ball. We decided to hold our backs behind the footy, this gave us two spares and we started to rebound off half back. As the quarter went on, we worked our way through Hamptons numbers and started to score.

The game started the same in the 2nd quarter with Hampton putting a lot of numbers around the stoppages. Again, we held our backs behind the footy and we rebounded like the 1st quarter. Our defenders were really disciplined and didn’t take liberty’s or push higher up for an easy possession. Our defensive shaper behind the ball all day was really pleasing. Our midfields ability to work from the off ball side and get back to support our backs in the defensive 50 gave us numbers to run the ball out in waves and overlap by hand. Our ruckman Garnett Brennan and Ruben Hopkins gave the mids first use, their tap work was allowing us to get on the move at stoppages.

After half time we came out with plenty of energy and saw us put on 9 goals in the quarter. At the end of each quarter, we were full of running, and this is due to the work the boys did in pre-season. I’m confident our fitness will hold us in good stead and keep us in games during the year. The forward line worked up the ground to help defend any turnovers, but also worked hard back inside our forward 50 to get shots on goal. Harry Laukens 10 goals, Liam Thomas 6 and Caleb Finlayson 5 were all off the back of team defence and then working hard to get used when we won the ball back.

To name the 6 best players was difficult due to the fact everyone contributed during the game. I was most pleased with the way we kept disciplined to the game style and structures when we gained a strong lead after half time. Right to the very end we had players applying pressure to the opposition, defenders playing their roles behind the ball, and hard gut running through the midfield channel.
