Round 1 Match Report

Wednesday 09 April 2025

A beautiful sunny day greeted us for the start of the 2025 VAFA season.

The senior men’s team were taking on arch rivals Old Trinity for the Old Mitre Cup, which was introduced last year upon our return to B grade.

A large crowd was in attendance as the day began with the ressies taking the field, highlighted by Matt Vogel playing his 100th game for the club.  “Voges” has been an outstanding contributor to the club over many years, both on and off the field.  His speed and determination during games has been a highlight, and as skipper of the 2nds, his leadership in driving standards during games and at training has been exemplary.  Well done on reaching this milestone Matt.

Unfortunately, the seconds were unable to get over the line in Matt’s milestone game.  After a bright three goal to nil first quarter, we were gradually overpowered by a strong Trinity side, but showed some good signs during the game.

The seniors took the field at 2.00pm, and got off to a strong start. Five goals to one set the game up, and by three quarter time the lead had been extended to 41 points.  But in a replica of last year’s game. Old Trinity stormed home in the last quarter, falling short by a solitary point.  It was a great game of footy, with 19 of the 25 goals scored at the northern end of the ground – a little bit of breeze and a lot of fatigue in the last quarter contributing to that.  Nevertheless, a great start to the season – we will take a win by any margin over a side that missed promotion last year by one kick.

The women’s team started their season with an emphatic victory against Prahran.  Our score of 12.19 was our highest for a long time, and it was great to see the team get rewarded for their efforts after a long year in 2024.

The Under 19’s travelled to the picturesque Brunswick Street Oval to take on Fitzroy in an early morning clash.  Having been promoted to Division 1, the boys were outclassed by a slick outift.  Being a new team, it will take a bit of time for the boys to gel together and to settle into the higher division.

Our Third XVIII travelled to Hampton and recorded a very solid ten-goal win.  The mix of the old and the new in this team just keep getting it done.  Well done men.

This weekend the senior men’s teams visit newly promoted Hampton who will be desperate to record their first win for the season, so a big challenge awaits.  The women travel to the Ian Johnston Oval to take on Albert Park in an early 9.30am game.

The Under 19’s host Oakleigh at 11.30am, while the Third XVIII will play Ajax on the other GBO Oval at 11.30am.

Finally, I would like to thank our committed sponsors – The Wellsmen, the OCGA, the Elgin Inn, Bluemouth Interactive, Mitchell Partners, Vicpole, Accru, ANZ Mobile Lending Doncaster, Anjou and Scalora, Marjay Services, Peak Physiotherapy and Berg Productions.  Look them up on the website and please support them when you can.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Seniors vs Trinity

Round 1 is always a bit of the unknown, how will we perform, have we trained the game style enough during pre-season and have we got the fitness base to run out a game?

We had 5 players play their first game for Old Camberwell. Lachie and James Harker, Will Day, Ruben Hopkins and Lachie McGowan. I’d like to thank Egan Smith, Alex Dance, Ryan “Matti” Whitehead and Ben Hart for presenting jumpers to our new players pre game.

The weather conditions saw sunshine and a breeze towards the scoreboard end. As in every 1st game it was a bit hectic early until both teams settled down. Our attack on the ball and the opposition was first rate, tackling efficiency would have been high. We miss a few easy targets by foot early in the game, but I was happy with the decision making, not the execution. We had the breeze in the 1st quarter. Our forward 50 entries gave Liam Thomas and Harry Laukens some good looks, also our defensive pressure inside 50 was pleasing.

Caleb Finlayson worked higher up the ground to apply pressure and then push forward to keep the ball inside our 50. Solid game all day by Caleb. Dave McColl’s pressure also was first rate. Dave’s rundown tackle in the 3rd is the benchmark around chasing to tackle, not just token pressure. The ruck duo of Garnett Brennan and Ruben Hopkins worked over their opponents. I’m impressed with both boys competitiveness and their ability to follow up after stoppages and lay tackles.

The 2nd quarter went for 36 minutes and our backs held up well to continually rebound Old Trinity’s forward entries. Like early in the game, we missed targets by foot. Sam Veitch got on top through the midfield and was giving us a lot of drive. Unfortunately, Sam felt hamstring tightness before halftime and took no further part in the game. Our 18 year old full back Lachie McGowanheld his own against Old Trinity’s captain, and looked comfortable with the physical side of senior football.

The 3rd we had the wind again and used it well kicking 6.5, we missed a few I feel we should kick. We also gave up two defensive stoppage goals that we will need to clean up going forward. Again, our high half forwards in Lachie Harker, Dave McColl, Caleb Finlayson, Callum Rutledge gave us defensive pressure through the midfield then pushed hard forward to keep the ball in our forward 50.

The last quarter we went in with a 41 point lead. We knew we had to defend the lead but also, we need to keep scoring. Trinity hit the score board early which I felt caused us to freeze a little with ball in hand. Some of our decision making under fatigue needs to improve. We rolled some numbers back to support our defenders. We did get through to score a goal to Ben Hart in the last, but we were continually defending. With limited rotations after half time, I can’t question the boys effort, we were fatiguing and some cramping up. We held a 7 point lead with 2 minutes to play and our aim was to control the tempo of the game. With a turnover they got another forward entry which resulted in a goal. We now had 15 sec left with the 1 point lead. The final centre bounce we just need to keep in tight. This saw a victory in round 1, and thoroughly deserved by the boys.

Women vs Prahran

After a merged season last year with one win, our new look Women’s team ran on to GBO with eleven girls playing their first game for the club.

Playing against Prahran, who were fielding their first Women’s team in many years, our girls started well and got better and better as the game went on.

The girls kicked a superb 12 goals to run out 90 point winners. It was suggested that our 91 points might be a club record.

Eight goal kickers got the job done with Bridget Facey, Liv Willie, Tiah Peterson and Emma Vogel each scoring two goals, with Lans, BK, Jess and Izzy Burke snagging one each. For Burkey it was her first goal in five years!

The girls sang the song with gusto after the match and really deserved the win after all the hard work they put in over pre-season.
Regards
