Round 18 Match Report

Friday 13 September 2024

The highlight of the previous weekend was the fantastic 2nd semi final win by our Under 19 boys. After a relatively even first half, a scintillating seven goal to nil third quarter set up a relatively comfortable 50-point win, and a direct path into this week’s Grand Final.  It was a great team effort with all players making a contribution.  A similar effort will be needed on Saturday to bring home the chocolates.

It is a great effort to get this far, but Grand Finals don’t come around often, so make the most of it boys.

By contrast, the men’s Seniors’ and Reserves’ seasons finished in disappointing fashion Saturday week ago.

The Old Caulfield reserves, previously winless for the year, contained several gun Under 19 players who certainly enjoyed their outing, leading to a 59 point victory for the opposition.  A big thank you to coach Steve Warr and his helpers, and to all players for their efforts throughout the year.  We have been very competitive in B grade – nothing to be sneezed at.

With a gale-force wind blowing down the ground, the Seniors played a reasonable first quarter, but were then blown away by a Caulfield side desperate to avoid relegation.  The boys looked flat – probably a consequence of having our finals hopes dashed the week before.

At the end of the game both Anson Brownless and Tim Killworth announced their “retirements”.
Anson has been the senior coach for ten years, with Tim his assistant for many of those.  Both have previously coached Old Camberwell Under 19 teams, and Tim was the senior coach between 2010 – 2012.  And of course Anson played some great footy for the club too.

We need to acknowledge their great contributions to the club.  In particular, guiding the club from D1 to Premier C to Premier B in consecutive years is something that we have never done before, and to then to lead the club to its best ever result in B grade is a great achievement.  We thank both Anson and Tim, and look forward to their continued involvement in the future.

I would also like to thank our other game day helpers for the men’s teams – Dave for being an awesome team manager, Andrew Lane and Andrew Wilson for their reserves boundary and goal umpiring duties respectively, John L and Peter W for their assistance with the time keeping, and Wearly for his lodgement of scores etc. with the VAFA, and his impeccable record keeping.  We could not do it without you – thank you so much.

As I mentioned before, Grand Final appearances are rare, and premierships even rarer.  The Under 19’s will be looking to make their own history at 9.20am this Saturday morning at La Trobe University, against University Blues.  We need as many supporters there as we can to cheer the boys on – I look forward to seeing you there!

Go Wellers!

Seniors vs Caulfield

Season's End for the Wellers

The Wellers’ season came to a close with a tough match against Caulfield Grammarians, a team desperate for a win to secure their place in Premier B. While the Wellers had little on the line, they still showed flashes of the competitive spirit that carried them through the season. However, it was clear from the outset that Caulfield came to play with everything they had. Their intent was most evident in the second quarter, where they unleashed a nine-goal blitz, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Despite the uphill battle, the Wellers continued to fight. Robbie West was a standout, displaying his usual grit and determination. Youngster Lachie O’Neill once again impressed with his silky skills, proving that he’s one to watch in the coming seasons. Ben Hart, Jimmy Allen, and Harrison Veitch also put in valiant efforts, working tirelessly throughout the match to keep the Wellers in the contest.

Though the final scoreline wasn’t in our favor, this match should be seen in the context of a very successful season in Premier B. The Wellers have shown that they can compete with some of the strongest clubs in the league, thanks to our depth of talent and unwavering work ethic. The commitment and resilience displayed by the team throughout the season are things we can all be proud of.

As this season marks the end of my tenure with the Club, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an incredible journey. Coaching the Wellers over the past ten years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve had the privilege of working with an amazing group of players who have given their all, both on and off the field. We’ve shared the highs of thrilling victories and the lows of tough losses, and through it all, we’ve built a bond that I will carry with me always.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the Club for the opportunity to lead this team. It has been an honor to be a part of this community, and I will forever cherish the memories we’ve made together. To the supporters, your unwavering dedication has been a constant source of inspiration. Whether in the stands or behind the scenes, your support has meant the world to me and the players.

As I step away, I do so with immense pride in what we’ve accomplished and with confidence that the Wellers will continue to thrive. Thank you all for being part of this extraordinary journey.
