Round 10 Match Report

Thursday 27 June 2024

There were mixed results for OCGAFC on the sunny but chilly Saturday just past.  The day got off to a great start at GBO with a number of Wellsmen, namely Boyd Elliott, Andrew Gibbs, Tez Walker and Matti Whitehead firing up the barbie and cooking a lovely array of gourmet sausages.  It was a big hit, with some good money raised for the club, and no reported cases of food poisoning.  Thanks for all your help fellas.

On field, the Under 19’s found themselves involved in a tight tussle with Parkside, eventually getting home by 10-points.  While it is always nice to win by a comfortable margin, winning a tight game is actually not a bad thing with finals approaching.

At the same time our Third XVIII were battling Marcellin.  It turned out to be a pretty dirty day, with a 53-point loss ensuing.  Another big challenge awaits this week as we take on second placed Old Carey.  Time to get back on the winner’s list!

The Women travelled to Mazenod, and after a tight first half, Mazenod kicked away with two goals in the third quarter, finally winning by 24 points.  It has been a tough season so far, but to their credit our ladies have kept their chins up and fought out every game.

The Reserves were up against Old Ivanhoe, who have “pantsed” us in our most recent couple of meetings.  But this time was different with our boys holding on for a thrilling one-point victory.  After hitting the front midway through the last quarter we closed the game down to the extent neither side scored in the last ten minutes.  A great win that keeps our finals hopes alive.

Unfortunately the Seniors could not repeat that result, falling short by 30 points.  We trailed for most of the day and never really threatened.  Repeated turnovers cost us dearly, and whilst our effort couldn’t be faulted, we will be looking for an improvement in our skills this week.

The loss was all the more disappointing in that it was Robbie West’s 100th gamefor the club.  A 2017 Under 19 premiership player, Robbie has been a very solid contributor since joining Old Camberwell – understated, but always getting the job done.  Well done Westy.

This week the men’s Seniors and Reserves travel to Williamstown, the Women play Oakleigh at 9.20 at the Ajax home ground, the Under 19’s are down at Parkdale, whilst the Thirds host Old Carey at 11.40.

Off the field, we are preparing for the Wellsmen lunch on Saturday 17 August.  As always, this will be a big event, with Dancey already on the case with the publicity machine starting to role.  Reserve that date in your diary now!

Seniors vs Old Ivanhoe

A classic battle was expected when Old Ivanhoe ventured to Gordon Barnard for a huge 3rd vs 4th clash. Year 11 schoolboy Sam Grlj came into the side along with Jack Spalding after a long spell, adding fresh energy to the team.
Old Ivanhoe’s intentions were clear from the start with a heavy tag on Jimmy Allen. The first half showcased a quick brand of football, with both sides testing each other relentlessly. At the half-time break, there was only a goal difference, with neither side gaining the upper edge.

The second half saw Old Ivanhoe turn up the heat and capitalize on some skill errors. They controlled the latter half of the game and ran away comfortable winners. Our boys kept trying all day and never gave up, but it was clear Ivanhoe had come to play and were the better side on the day.

Standout players down back included Kellan Percy, Ben Hart, and Lachie O'Neil, who had a standout game across halfback with some precision kicking. Liam Thomas was again busy forward with four majors, while Harry McColl played a super game with two goals. Tom Oliver enjoyed a run in the middle, taking on Ivanhoe's most dangerous player, and youngsters Pat Blewand Lachlan Purcell played great games on their respective wings.

Next week, we travel to Williamstown for a must-win clash.

Best Players: Thomas Oliver, Lachlan O’Neill, Lachlan Purcell, Harry McColl, James Allen, Liam Thomas
Goal Kickers: Liam Thomas 4, Harry McColl 2, Caleb Finlayson 1, Harry Laukens 1, Lachlan Purcell 1
