Round 12 Match Report

Friday 26 July 2024

I wanted to start this week’s newsletter with the sad news of the passing of Ian Mason – a legendary CGS teacher and one of the founders of the OCGAFC back in 1960.  As a teacher Ian had a profound influence on the lives of many CGS students, and his support of our football club was unwavering.  Our thoughts are with his family and many friends.  A more extensive tribute to Ian will be included in next week’s newsletter.

Saturday was a miserable day on and off the field.  On a bitterly cold and occasionally wet day only our Under 19 boys could register a win.  They smacked arch-rivals Old Trinity by 70 points, always a satisfying outcome.  In the process they retained top-spot on the ladder, and with four rounds to play are well placed for a top-two finish.

Earlier in the day I ventured down to the Ross Gregory Oval to watch our Women take on Powerhouse.  In general play we were fantastic – the only frustration was the inability to finish ff our work with a goal.  Hang in there girls, you deserve to be rewarded for your stellar efforts.

The Seniors were engaged in a tight tussle with Old Geelong.  Kicking with the breeze in the opening quarter, we opened up a three goal lead, and it took until late in the last quarter for Old Geelong to peg us back.  It was disappointing not to get over the line, but again we were competitive with a very good side for much of the day – we just have to finish off our work more efficiently.  The game was notable for being Kellan Percy’s 100th appearance for OCGAFC.  Big Kell’s laid back manner belies his fierce determination, and I know how committed he is to the OCGAFC cause, often playing through pain so as not to let his teammates down.  Well  down Kell, you have become an integral part of the OCGAFC First XVIII.

Both the Reserves and the Thirds were impacted by player unavailabilities, with the Thirds particularly hard hit.  The ressies were competitive, but fell short by 27 points, while the Third XVIII was walloped by 61 points.  We expect some respite this week, with a number of players returning to duty.

Speaking of milestones, this week will see Matt Cottrell play his 300th game for the club, becoming only the second player in our history to achieve that feat.  What a sensational performance, and Tim Killworth has writing a fitting tribute to Matt which is included in this newsletter.

This week the senior men’s teams travel to Beaumaris for what will be must win games for both teams.  The Unders play at Oakleigh at 11.40, the women take on Old Trinity at GBO at 9.20 and in Matt Cottrell’s milestone game, the Thirds host Kew at 11.40am.

Good luck to all teams on the weekend.

Go Wellers.

Matt 'The Mailman' Cottrell - 300 Games

Image

Club legend Matt Cottrell will this Saturday achieve a significant achievement in Old Camberwell Grammarians Footy Club’s history by joining Jordan Heffernan as the second player in Club history to achieve the 300 games played milestone.

‘Cotters’, the son of Tim Cottrell, past player and current club official, along with brother Brett has maintained a strong family connection with the Club over many seasons.

Joining the Club in 2001, Cotters experienced Premiership success in his first season playing in the Under 19s under the tutelage of Club legend Michael “Siggy” Sigalas. It has turned out that to date, that year has been his only premiership experience. Who knows what lies ahead!

A Reserves XV111 Best & Fairest winner in 2004, 2010, 2011 & 2012 and a member of the Reserves Grand Final teams of 2006 and 2007, Matt was awarded Club Life Membership in 2012 for services to the Club over many seasons.

Now very much a family man with an extremely supportive wife and three children, Matt continues to front up each week and perform at the highest level for our Third XV111, who remain well in contention for a spot in the finals this season.

With a neat sidestep, always making him extremely difficult to tackle, Matt still patrols the midfield with great authority and as they often say … the Mailman Always Delivers!! Many of his coaches have called on him to provide something special in the big matches, being known as a ‘Good Driver in Heavy Traffic’.

Well done Matt, a great achievement for you and your family, we all look forward to seeing you achieve the next milestone – Club Games Record Holder.

Seniors vs Old Geelong
Wellers Fall Short in Epic Battle at Barnard

Old Geelong 60 - Old Camberwell 52
Beanies and scarves were the order of the day as Melbourne's winter hit hard, setting the stage for a thrilling contest at Barnard Oval. The Wellers welcomed Jay Kennedy Harris and David McColl back after extended breaks, and their impact was felt immediately.

What a start it was for the Wellers, kicking the first three goals and keeping a strong Old Geelong outfit scoreless in the first quarter. Jay Kennedy Harris made his presence felt early with plenty of touches and an early goal, showcasing his skill and determination.

However, Old Geelong fought back in the second quarter with some slick ball movement, narrowing the gap and setting the stage for a tightly contested match.

The second half belonged to Geelong, who managed to kick away late in the game due to some costly errors from the Wellers. Despite the setbacks, the Wellers fought it out to the end, but Geelong surged late to secure a hard-fought victory in a demanding contest that was not for the fainthearted.

Lachlan Purcell had a standout game, along with the hard nuts in the middle, James Allen and Harrison Veitch, who never gave up. Harry Laukens continued his good form up forward and future stars of the club, Callum Rutledge and Harry McColl, were also impressive in the trying conditions.

The Wellers will need to quickly lick their wounds and prepare to face Beaumaris next week. Thanks to all supporters who braved the conditions .
