Round 11 Match Report

Friday 05 July 2024

For the first time in a few weeks it was a dreary Saturday afternoon – very cold and plenty of drizzle.  And unfortunately our results matched the weather with only the men’s senior team tasting victory.

The men travelled to Williamstown, with the Reserves confident of a victory that would have moved them into the top four.  But a sluggish start that saw us 32-points down at half-time proved costly.  Despite a much improved performance in the second half, the boys had left themselves with too much to do, eventually going down by 13 points.  It was great, however, to see Simon Bennett, former First XVIII captain and superstar, having a run around.  The umpire was able to report that he had lost none of his verbal jousting ability.

The Senior men followed and were in control of the game from early in the second quarter.  Harry Laukens stood tall in LT’s absence, kicking six goals, and coupled with a strong defensive effort, contributed to a 25-point victory.  We now sit sixth on the ladder, but on the same number of wins as second placed De La Salle.  It is a very tight competition!

The Women took on Oakleigh at Gary Smorgon Oval, but despite their best efforts, were unable to register a goal while conceding five to their opponents.

The Under 19’s suffered a rare defeat, being overrun in the last quarter to lose by 16 points.  Having five Unders playing in the senior side probably didn’t help!

In a game where 15 of the 18 goals were scored at one end of the ground, the Thirds were unable to take full advantage of their quarters with the breeze, going down to Old Carey by 40-points.  It is the time of the year when injuries and unavailabilities are starting to bite, but we are still within half a game of third place on the ladder.

We have now entered the mid-season bye period – two weeks for the men’s senior and Under 19 teams, and one week for the women and Third XVIII.

On 13th July the Thirds will host Richmond Central, and the Women take-on Whitefriars at Gary Smorgon Oval.

Enjoy your break, we will be back in touch soon.

Go Wellers.

Seniors vs Williamstown

The Wellers Bounce Back with a Win at Williamstown
After a couple of tough losses, the Wellers were determined to get back on track with an away win at the challenging Williamstown Oval, where the wet weather demanded a physical game.

We were thrilled to welcome back Sam Boyce and George Kalagyros, adding some much-needed physical strength to the contest, and celebrated the debut of Josh Blew, who joined his brother Patrick  in the senior side.
From the opening bounce, the energy levels were high, and the boys played hard, contested football. Harry Veith was dominant in the middle despite being heavily tagged, and our quick ball movement and deep, long entries into the forward line paid off handsomely.

Harry Laukens made his mark on the game early, on his way to an impressive six-goal haul. Andrew Parker was in everything and by the end of the second quarter, we had pulled away, leading Williamstown by six goals to one in a dominant first half.

The second half saw Williamstown fight back, but we always had the answers. Our back six were on top, with Ben Hart and Will Dalrymple standing out, and setting up numerous forward bursts. Big man Gus Milham dominated in the middle, well supported by Jimmy Allen, who is in career-best form. Josh Blew up forward also acquitted himself well with 2 classy goals.

A great Team Win with every player contributing.

A big thank you to all those who braved the weather to support us. We look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks' time.
