200 Games Milestone Celebration – Harry Crothers This week we celebrated Harry “Croix” Crothers magnificent milestone by playing his 200th game for the mighty Wellers. Over 12 seasons, he has quietly amassed this number of games with a body that has carried him across the line with minimal games missed through injury. Whilst it is fair to say that even Harry would admit he lacks a yard of pace, he makes up for it in spades with footy smarts. Brave, elusive, difficult to tackle and dangerous to the opposition around goal, he has kicked 132 goals for the Club. Off field, his dry sense of humour has always made him a highly popular member of our Club.
‘Croix’ joined the Club in 2012 playing Under 19s, and he debuted for the seniors the following season, winning the Club’s ‘Rising Star’ award.
As we said, he has been amazingly resilient, rarely missing with injury. This was perhaps enabled by the fact that he used his cricketing prowess as an excuse to miss out on pre-season footy training. To his great credit, he always presented in good shape and ready to play when the time arrived to don the footy boots.
Harry was part of the club’s evolution into a highly performing Premier B team by being part of the successful teams of 2018, 2021 & 2022 that played finals or led the comp in the Covid period. His midfield craft was admired and regarded by all.
He remains motivated to chase down that elusive premiership success and we all certainly hope that he will retain the motivation to keep playing long enough to enjoy the success as a premiership player that he rightfully deserves. Well done Harry, 200 great games!
Seniors vs De La Salle
In a match that showcased immense determination, the Wellers put in a superhuman effort, only to fall just short in a pulsating finish at GBO.
We welcomed De La Salle, the form team of the competition, to our home ground. Having beaten them earlier in the season, the Wellers were confident that the home ground advantage and a bumper crowd would propel us back into the top four. The team was bolstered by the return of key players Harrison and Sam Veitch to the starting lineup.
De La Salle came out strong, sensing an opportunity early on. They dominated around the ground with precision kicking and excellent marking, while the Wellers paid dearly for some errant shots on goal and missed opportunities in the first half. The third quarter continued in much the same vein, with De La Salle looking dangerous and our forward line struggling to capitalize. Despite this, standout performances from Sam Vietch and Riley Verbi kept us in the contest, as they battled hard and won plenty of the ball in the middle. Our effort & pressure couldn't be questioned however hitting the scoreboard was the problem.
In the final quarter, the Wellers came to life with a fierce attack on the ball and some damaging forward movement. Goals from Kennedy Harris and Harry McColl brought the large crowd to its feet. We clawed our way back to within a point late in the quarter, but De La Salle always found a way to respond, ultimately securing an 8-point win.
Though the disappointment of the loss was palpable, the boys can hold their heads high, knowing they matched a seasoned opposition for most of the day. Liam Thomas was a constant threat up forward , finishing with 4 goals despite often being double-teamed. Jay Kennedy Harris was also dangerous around half forward finishing with 2 goals. Young stars Patrick Blewhad one of his best games of the year, and Lachlan O'Neil was a force off the half-back line with his lethal right foot.
Thank you to all who attended this fantastic game of footy on Saturday—a game that demonstrated we truly belong in B grade.
