Round 15 Match Report

Thursday 15 August 2024

We are reaching the business end of the season for some teams, and merely the end of the season for others.

The Women concluded their season on Saturday, and in one of their best performances for the year, fell agonisingly short in their game against Mazenod.  After failing to trouble the scorers in the first three quarters, the girls turned it on late, kicking two goals in the last quarter to eventually lose by one point.  Although not achieving the ultimate results, the girls can be very proud of their efforts.  And a big thank you to coach Nick Hooper and team manager Emma Vogel for all of their hard work throughout the season.

Earlier in the day the Third XVIII extended their season by at least one more week by defeating Masala in the Elimination Final.  It was tight all day until a powerful five goal burst in the last quarter blew the opposition away.  Great work boys and hopefully you can knock over Old Carey in the preliminary final this week.

The Under’s had a very solid 37-point win against Uni Blues, and in the process guaranteed themselves a top two ladder finish.  It has been a great season so far for Al and his boys – they just need to keep working hard and focus on the next game.

The Reserves were outclassed by Old Trinity, which was not surprising given they sit two games clear on top of the ladder with a massive percentage.  To their credit the boys were competitive until halftime, after which a Trinity side containing a number of senior players skipped away.

Finally, the Seniors played in a cracking game against a very good Old Trinity side.  On the back of immense pressure and accuracy in front of goal we got out to a six-goal lead early in the third quarter, only to see the opposition gradually whittle away the lead, finally drawing level with little more than a minute to go.  Although disappointing not to win, it was a very high standard game and reinforced we can match it with the better sides in the competition.

This Saturday will again see a number of milestones with Sam Garrard, Dom Rossetti and Oli Papillo all due to play their 50th games.  We love their enthusiasm and the commitment they bring, well done to all three of you.

And Harry Crothers will run out for the 200th time for the club on Saturday – a fantastic achievement after 13 years at the club.  Congratulations Harry, you have played some great footy over that time, and your consistency and durability is admirable.  And a great bloke to boot!

This week the Senior men’s teams play De La Salle at home, with the Under 19’s also at home to Uni Blacks at 9.20am.  The Thirds play Old Carey at La Trobe University at 11.40 on Sunday in the preliminary final.  Let’s get out and support the boys in their quest to get through to a grand final.

It will be a massive day at GBO on Saturday with The Wellsmen hosting a big lunch with over 100 guests.  This guarantees a vocal crowd for our crucial game against De La, with a win needed to keep our finals hopes alive.  Even if you can’t make the lunch, it would be great to see you down there to cheer the boys on.

Go Wellers.

Seniors vs Old Trinity

Post-Match Report: The Wellers Hold Off Late Trinity Charge to Secure a Draw

With the Mitre Cup on the line and a top-four spot up for grabs, the Wellers ventured out to Chelsworth Park, Ivanhoe, to take on Old Trinity, whose ground was unfortunately out of action. Chelsworth Park has been a successful venue for us over the past two years, and we were hopeful of adding another win to that record.

This week saw the return of some key players, with Jay Kennedy Harris and Harry McColl back from injury, and young talents Jack Spalding and Ben Carlile stepping up from the Unders. The Wellers started strong, showcasing some blistering ball movement, with Kellan Percy stepping up in the ruck and Ben Hart dominating through the middle. Caleb Finlaysonwas electric on the wing, contributing to our impressive nine-goal-to-five first half.

Up forward, Liam Thomas was a force in the air, well supported by Harry Laukens and Lachlan Purcell, who pushed forward to snag three opportunistic goals. However, after the long break, Old Trinity found their rhythm, getting their running game going and mounting a serious challenge.

Our boys brought intense pressure for most of the day, but in the end Trinity’s tall players and talented mids became a significant threat in the thrilling final quarter. Despite their relentless attack, the Wellers managed to hang on bravely , securing a important draw and retaining the Mitre Cup.

While an opportunity for a win was lost, the effort to secure two points will be valuable as we face three tough remaining games. A big thank you to all those who made the trip to Ivanhoe to support the team.

Best Players: Ben Hart, Lachlan O’Neill, Thomas Oliver, Jack Spalding, Kellan Percy, Caleb Finlayson
Goal Kickers: Harry Laukens 3, Lachlan Purcell 3, Liam Thomas 3, Riley Verbi 2, Caleb Finlayson 1, George Kalargyros 1, Jay Kennedy harris 1
