Round 14 Match Report

Thursday 08 August 2024

In an unusual coincidence, both the Senior men’s and Under 19’s teams hosted St Bedes/Mentone.  We knew the opposition meant business when a bus turned up at 10.00am carrying 40 odd players, who were all walking across the oval before Charlie Urwin had even had a chance to open the rooms!

The Under 19’s recorded a comfortable four goal win in a match that was called off three minutes early after the opposition coach was “black carded” for abusing an umpire.  Not the example we want to be setting.  We remain on top of the ladder with three rounds to go.

After trailing by 23 points at three quarter time the Reserves kicked three goals to one in the last quarter, but fell short by 11 points.  We are a game and percentage outside the top four so are looking for a strong finish to the season.

The Seniors produced a scintillating seven goal to zip first quarter, showing some of their best ball movement for the year, and went on to win by 43 points.  It was great to have Riley Verbi back from overseas playing his first game for the year.  He could make a real impact as we take on the top three sides over the next three weeks.

Despite being smacked by the undefeated Old Xavier, our Third XVIII retained 3rdposition on the ladder courtesy of other results.  I understand the boys have delivered a few slabs to Marcellin and Parkside during the week to thank them for upsetting their more fancied opponents.

Our Women took on top side Glen Eira/Old Mackinnon, and although soundly beaten, were able to marvel at the standard of the opposition’s play.  Clearly they belong in a higher division.  We look forward to a more even match this weekend.

This Saturday will see a number of milestones – women’s captain Alannah Frampton and teammate Emma Hooper both play their 50th game for the club – well done ladies, hopefully we can have a win to celebrate.

Riley Verbi and Tom Nicholson will both play their 50th game.  Well done to you both, and we look forward to many more for Old Camberwell.

This week the senior men’s teams play Old Trinity at Old Ivanhoe, with the Trinity grounds being unavailable.  The Under 19’s play Uni Blues at Uni in an 11.40am game, while the women play their final game of the year against Mazenod at 2.00pm at GBO.  The Thirds host Masala in a knockout semi final at 1.30-m at GBO.  We need your support everywhere this weekend – at Ivanhoe, at GBO at Uni.  So, if you can get down to support, that would be great.

Finally, we will be looking for a couple of volunteers to join our committee next year, and in particular, are looking for someone who can help organise the canteen.  If you have any interest, or know of anyone who could help, please let us know.  It is crucial people put their hands up to keep the club running smoothly.

Good luck to all teams on the weekend.

Go Wellers.

Seniors vs St Bedes

Wellers Secure Crucial Win After First Quarter 7-Goal Blitz
The Wellers clinched a vital victory, propelled by a remarkable first-quarter performance that saw us score seven unanswered goals against St Bedes on a fine afternoon at home.

Andrew Parker, was celebrating his 150th game for the Club. Andrew's dedication and contribution to the team over a decade have been unparalleled, and it was fitting to honor his milestone with a fine win.

We were also delighted to welcome back Riley Verbi after an extended holiday in Canada, and it was also fantastic to see the return of big man Liam Thomas, who rejoined us from Richmond VFL during their bye. Our full back, Kellan Percy, was also back and fresh after a break last week.

In my pre-game talk, we emphasized the importance of a fast start, and the boys delivered spectacularly. The Wellers dominated the first quarter, leaving St Bedes reeling with a 7-goal to nil onslaught. Liam Thomas was unstoppable early on, catching everything in his path, supported by the dynamic Sam Grlj, who added two classy goals to the tally. Ben Hart returned to the middle, dominating play, while young tall Garnet Brennan held his own against a VFL-listed ruckman. Will Dalrymple was a force in defense, winning plenty of ball and setting up numerous forward entries.

The Wellers showcased some scintillating, end-to-end fast football some of the best for the year. The last three quarters, however, saw a more balanced contest, with St Bedes playing some attacking football of their own and at times outplaying us.

Despite suffering a few injuries, the boys fought valiantly late in the game  to secure our ninth win of the season. This victory places us within striking distance of the tightly contested top four in Prem B.
A heartfelt thanks to the large, vocal crowd who supported us on the day.
