Round 13 Match Report

Thursday 01 August 2024

We hit the depths of the Melbourne winter on Saturday – it was cold, wet, and windy.  Fortunately, on field results added some cheer to the day.

For the first time in a while there were plenty of players putting their hand up to play in the Third XVIII on the weekend – was it to celebrate Matt Cottrell’s 300thor Cohen Frazer’s 50th.  I spoke about Matt’s feat in last week’s newsletter, so this week we will talk about Cohen.  What a great clubman – hardly misses a training session, including pre-season, gives his all every week regardless of which team he is selected in, and is a great young man to boot.  Well done Coh. And the boys came to play, seeing off Kew by 16 points to keep our finals’ hopes alive with one round to go.

At the same time the Under 19’s were battling it out at Oakleigh.  In a low scoring game in difficult conditions, we ground out an important eight-point win.  Sometimes you just have to win ugly!

Earlier in the day the women battled hard against Old Trinity.  Unfortunately, the familiar pattern played out again – great in general play but unable to finish off our work with a goal. A twilight game at Glen Eira this week would be a great time to remedy that.

The ressies had a great win at Beaumaris with Caine Hillier kicking five goals in difficult conditions.  These lads turn up and have a crack week after week, and with five games to go are well and truly in the hunt for finals.

In Pat Blew’s 50th game for the club the seniors had an excellent 32-point win in what shaped as a danger game.  Blewie showed his usual grit and determination taking down blokes twice his size in bone jarring tackles – a real inspiration to the rest of the side.

This week Andrew Parker will play his 150th game for the club.  Parks has been a great servant of the club, playing whatever role he is asked on field, with his off-field leadership just as valuable.  Well done Parks, a fine achievement.

This week the Senior men’s teams host St Bedes Mentone, as do the Under 19’s in an 11.40am game.  The Thirds head across to undefeated Xavier for a 9.20am game, while the Women take on top-side Glen Eira / Old Mackinnon in a 4.45pm game at Glen Eira.

I look forward to seeing as many supporters as possible down at GBO on Saturday to cheer all the boys on, and support Parksy in his 150th.

Go Wellers.

Seniors vs Beaumaris

The Wellers Triumph with a Gutsy Win on the Road
Wintery conditions greeted us in a must-win battle away at Beaumaris with the Wellers rising to the challenge and coming away with a comfortable 32 point Victory.

Key inclusions for the match were Flynn Chable, who has been dominating the reserves and  Under 19's captain Ben Carlisle who played a blinder off the half back. . Additionally, Fraser Wells made welcome return to senior football, having last played in 2019, and didn't miss a beat.

The weather ensured a dour slugfest, but the Wellers were in control for most of the day and handled the slippery conditions by far the better  . Beaumaris would show patches of play but were never allowed to challenge . The final quarter we managed to pull further away, securing a decisive victory.

Harry Laukens was instrumental up forward, kicking 4 classy goals. Jimmy Allen and George Kalagyros were in everything in the muddy middle, they  were well supported by Pat Blew & Lachie Purcell who were dominating their respective wings .

Our backline was again rock-solid, limiting Beaumaris to just 2 goals for the entire day. Andrew Parker & Tom Olivereffectively nullified  Beauy's dangerous tall forwards, while Ben Carlisle & Lachie O'Neil provided plenty of run from defense.

This was a great four-quarter effort which keeps us in touch with the top 4 in Prem B .

A big thank you to the large number of supporters who braved the rain to cheer us on!
