Round 9 Match Report

Thursday 22 June 2023

It was a big day for the Club on Saturday.  We hosted a lunch to celebrate the 1978 senior premiership, the inaugural women’s premiership in 2017, and the Under 19’s 2017 premiershipAdam Kyriacou hosted a panel consisting of representatives from each of those teams, and the audience were treated to some wonderful recollections and highlights for each team.  It was great to see a lot of familiar faces back at the Club.  A good time was had by all.  We look forward to our next “ball burster” of an event to be held on 12 August.  A huge thank you toAlex Dance and Adam Kyriacou for their tireless work, together with other members of the Wellsmen Committee and the OCGAFC community who helped out on the day.

The Thirds kicked off proceedings with a thrilling one-point victory out at West Brunswick.  It was close all day, and despite kicking only one goal in the last quarter, we held on to win.  The boys remain in fourth place on the ladder, but with the same number of wins as second placed Ivanhoe.

After leading at three quarter time, the Under 19’s were overrun in the last quarter, eventually going down by 7 points to Old Mackinnon/Glen Eira.  We remain in second place on the ladder, while Old Mackinnon are third, so the game certainly showed we can match it with good opposition.

The Women had an excellent 36 point victory over Hampton, and remain just outside the top-four, with a very winnable game to come this week.

Our Seconds went down to a slick Marcellin outfit by 41 points, but remain two games clear in fourth spot.

With a gale at their backs, the First XVIII booted 7.9 in the last quarter to storm over the top of a shell-shocked Marcellin, eventually winning by eight points.  The Houdini acts continue, but I’ve had plenty of supporters ask me when we might put four quarters together – a very fair question.  A loss by PEGS to Ivanhoe saw us move to top spot on the ladder at the halfway point of the year, but with a daunting trip to arch-rival PEGS this weekend.

2023 has seen amateur football return to normal, signified in no small way by the number of players jetting off overseas in the next few weeks.  The sheer number of players who will be absent will put a huge drain on our resources – we might be looking to a few old-timers to pull the boots on in July!

This week our senior men’s teams travel to PEGS for what are sure to be tough games.  Our women host Old Xaverians at 9.20am, with the Under 19’s also at home against Mazenod.  The thirds travel to Richmond AFC to play the top side.

Go Wellers,

President

Thirds vs West Brunswick

A tumultuous turn of events saw what should have been an easy win result in a dog fight that lead old Camberwell to a single point victory against west Brunswick, 60-59.

Much can be said about the umpiring (or lack thereof) displayed in this weeks attempted amicable affair. Holding the ball, high tackles and front on contact were apparently absent rules in this game as Harry Rice and Cameron Martin both failed a concussion test with no free kicks awarded. The ground saw better days as the centre square appeared like amputee’s prosthetic… looking a little like the missing appendage but similarly not quite right.

The Fremantle doctor paid the ground a visit and the advantage was palpable. Electing to take quarters two and four for the benefit, old Camberwell showed skills and class in the opening term with Javana Jayawardena, outclassing his opponents with precision. A hamstring strain (suspected tear) saw him sidelined early in the second quarter and the bench of four was reduced to three. Harry Rice’s unfortunate front on collision caused the prime number positioned bench reduced to two.

Jeremie Alexeyeff and Benjamin Williams used every bit of football knowledge they had ever learned to support and hold the midfield pressure and leave the west Brunswick bicycle riders pumping up their own deflated tires. Liam Mouat showed courage and the protective instincts of a mother bear protecting her young through the harsh winters of the north as he marked ball after ball as they were booted to the backline.

Third quarter had the boys facing a tough reality that interchanges and time to rest were to be as likely as a state government efficiently using tax payers dollars for community concessions. Oliver Papillo displayed some sneaky sorcery as he produced a sexy goal that fired up the team for the final quarter. Cameron Martin fought hard and tough until he was directly hit off the ball and sent mentally into a world us cognisant individuals can only imagine. The respite of the bench was now impossible and the score closing from a 21 point lead.

With 5 minutes to go, the players all searching for air like the world for missing flight MH370, west Brunswick kicked the leather through the two verticals to bring the margin to 8. A poor centre clearance and a mark meant West Brunswick were lining for goal. As if Jesus himself had awoken, an easterly breeze pushed the ball across the face for a minor score. Matthew Tesorierowhile valiant throughout the day had a brain fade the likes of which had the opposition trainer asking if he too needed a concussion test. The ball was turned over and the margin was down to a single point.

Territory ball and stoppages of play were all that could end this event and Matthew Cottrell, like a ray of sunshine to ease the Scandinavian winter depression, cleared the ball to the centre with 52 second left. Tough contested ruck contests by Gabriel Shaw and James Smith meant old Camberwell could hold on for dear life like the passengers of the titanic in 1912.

Mens Seniors vs Marcellin

Wellers storm home to claim top spot

James Seaton-Nichol would play his first senior game after many stand out performances in the ressies and we would welcome back experienced players James Allen, Kellan Percy, Rob West and after an extended spell Jay Kennedy-Harris was back .

A howling wind could be blamed for a very ordinary first 3 quarters from the Wellers, but we were simply outclassed by a very determined and hungry Marcellin on our home ground.

The 4th quarter trailing by 37 points we would finally get our running game going with Gus Milham taking over in the middle and Riley Verbi, James Allen & Ben Hart were proving too much for a tiring Marcellin to handle. We would rally kicking 7 goals to score a thrilling 8-point victory.

Kellan Percy was judged BOG he was well supported by Matt Powell who continues his super form this season.

Next week we travel to PEGS for a very important clash.

A huge thanks to all supporters who braved the conditions
