Round 13 Match Report

Thursday 27 July 2023

Player unavailability reached a new low on Saturday with the Seniors fielding a side of 22 players, the reserves 21 and the Under 19’s 20.  Injuries and travel have certainly taken their toll!

The Senior men’s teams travelled to Ormond where we found the ground to be in perfect order and weather conditions ideal.

After leading for most of the day, the Seconds were overrun late with Ormond kicking the last three goals of the game to claim victory.  It was a gallant effort by the boys with several lads “playing hurt” to get us through.

The Seniors followed and played some great footy after halftime in recording a 6-goal win.  Our tally of 16 goals was our highest for the season – a good sign with finals footy approaching.  Young guns Liam Thomas and Harry Laukens both hit the scoreboard, with 6 and 5 goals respectively.

Congratulations go Will Dalrymple for playing his 100th game for the club.  After playing in the 2017 Under 19 premiership, Will has improved every year, to the point that he is now a member of the senior leadership group and a key contributor every week.  Well done Will.

Our Women went down to Old Haileybury by 7 points, after leading for much of the day.  It was one of those games where inaccuracy cost us.  Despite the defeat the improvement of our women’s team across the season has been marked, with this performance compared to the previous match against Haileybury being of a far higher quality.

An undermanned Under 19 team fought hard against St Bedes/Mentone, finally succumbing by 30 points.  We have a big game against top of the table Old Carey this week, but will be bolstered by the return of a number of players, so look forward to a bold showing.

For the second time in three games our Thirds were forced to forfeit due to low numbers, but we will be good to go again this week.

The senior men’s teams have a bye this weekend, while the women host Marcellin at 2.00pm, the Under 19’s take on Old Carey at Carey at 2.00pm, and the Thirds take on Ivanhoe at GBO at midday.

Good luck to all teams.

Go Wellers,

Gavin Powell
President

Mens Seniors vs Ormond

After last fortnight’s loss to Mazenod the boys were determined to turn things around with a tough trip out to the small confines of EE Gunn Reserve. Another 2 debutants would come into the side inform big man Pat Boakes from the ressies and Lachie Ross up from our strong unders. We would also welcome back for his second game Lachlan Oneill from the School team fresh off a win over Peninsula on Friday afternoon.

Great to see veterans Rob Deev & Harry Crothers back into the team to help celebrate Will Dalrymple playing in his 100th game for the Club and what a beauty he played!

Our first half wasn’t great as we struggled to link up forward with Ormond proving the classier outfit with some slick ball hands and their giant ruckman kicking a couple of goals.

In second half the Wellers would come to life; Jimmy Allen & Sam Veitch would take control in the middle & our twin towersLiam Thomas (6 goals) & Harry Laukens (5 goals )would dominate our front half. Mr versatile Ben Hart would enjoy a dominant game down back, being well supported by Matt Powell & Josh Holding keeping Ormond to 3 goal second half.

Overall, an impressive result considering we have had many changes with guys away enjoying time in Europe.

Another bye this week, we hope to see you all in a fortnight with our game away at Hampton .

Thanks to all support on the day.
