Round 12 Match Report

Wednesday 12 July 2023

With the Under 19’s having a bye on Saturday, four OCGAFC teams took the field, and for the first time in a while, none were successful.

On another windy afternoon, the Senior men’s team went down by two points to a determined Mazenod unit.  We had plenty of opportunities, particularly early in the game, but were unable to capitalise.  Congratulations go to Matthew Powell for playing his 100th game for the club.  Over the journey Matt has battled a number of injuries, but his persistence has paid off, and he has become a very consistent performer who is one of the first picked.

The Seconds fought courageously against first-placed Mazenod but fell agonisingly short by three points.  A number of Under 19 boys filled in given the unavailability of many regulars and acquitted themselves really well in a promising sign for the future.

Our Women went down to Old Geelong by 31 points.  One highlight of the afternoon was Rosie Strasser playing her 50th game for the club.  Rosie is a great team women, which is exemplified by her recently taking on the team manager duties while recovering from injury.  With four games to go we need to win all games and have a bit of luck with other results to make finals, but you can be sure our girls will give it their best shot.

Our Third XVIII Lost to Ormond by 32 points, but remain firmly in the hunt for finals.

An all-competition bye weekend awaits us, with football to resume on Saturday 22 July.  The men’s senior teams will travel to Ormond, the women will visit Old Haileybury, the Under 19’s play St Bedes away, and the Third XVIII will host Ivanhoe.  Important games for all sides!

Alex Dance and the Wellsmen Committee are in the midst of organising our next lunch, to be held at GBO on 12 August.  If early indications of interest are any guide, it will be a beauty.  The lunch will celebrate seven, that’s right – seven, premierships, being the 1993 seniors and reserves, the 1998 reserves, 2006 Under 19’s, 2007 seniors, 2008 Club XVIII and the 2009 Under 19’s.  Tickets are available via the Club’s website.

Go Wellers,

Gavin Powell
President

Mens Seniors vs Mazenod

Round 12 saw the senior men’s side take on an in-form Mazenod outfit on a windy day at GBO. It was going to be a great challenge with a number of changes to the side following some player departure’s for Europe during the week. It was very exciting to welcome into the senior side Ben Grij (up from the U19s) and Lachlan O’Neill who is still in year 12 at Camberwell Grammar and is having a great year for the school side.

As expected in the conditions, the game was scrappy from the outset - the team who was winning the contested ball was going to come out on top. From the start, the midfield, led by skipper Jimmy Allen were determined and tough. We spent the majority of the field quarter attacking, however we were unable to capitalise and aside from an excellent finish and goal from Jimmy Seaton-Nichol, we wasted a number of opportunities. Equally frustrating was a late goal to Mazenod, which would narrow the margin at quarter time.

As the first half wore on, Mazenod seemed to adapt to the game style better than us. They were gradually able to work their way into the lead with some excellent finishing in front of goal. Overall, we were trying hard but couldn’t make the most of our opportunities. Despite the numerous great efforts of Jack Kerr in the backline, and Harry Veitch in the middle, we only managed a single point in the 2nd quarter, while Mazenod took the lead at half time 1.7 – 13 to 3.0 -18.

The second half was an arm wrestle in which we never gave up but were eventually unable to run down a determined Mazenod side. The final score being 36 to 38. It is bitterly disappointing that we didn’t manage to snatch a victory in a game where we had our chances. Having said that, it was a great effort to push for 4 quarters with a rapidly diminishing interchange bench due to several injuries. The challenge now is to bounce back after a bye and return to the winners list. It is a difficult time of the year with injuries and travel plans but we need to stick together and get the job done after a week off.
