Round 17 Match Report

Wednesday 30 August 2023

On a good day for football, the Under 19’s hosted fourth placed Old Mackinnon/Glen Eira, in a match that would have significant implications for both teams’ finals chances.  After a tight first half, Old Camberwell drew away to win convincingly by 39 points.  As Old Haileybury knocked off Old Carey, we will still need to win our final game to be guaranteed a top two finish.

The Mens Seniors travelled to Marcellin, and in ideal conditions recorded a comfortable 49-point victory.  This win secured the minor premiership – something we have not achieved for some considerable time.

Unfortunately the Ressies were unable to get over the line, effectively putting finals out of reach.  It was really a case of too little too late – Saturday’s team was the best we had put out on the park for the year, and it showed in the result, going down by only 9 points to a pretty strong side.  Hopefully the boys can finish the season strongly with a win over Parkdale this weekend.

This week the Senior men’s teams host Parkdale, who are fourth on the ladder in both grades, so it promises to be a stern test for both sides.  The Under 19’s are playing St Kevins away at 9.20am.

This weekend will see the end of the home and away season, with finals to follow for the Seniors and Under 19’s.  It would be great to get as much support as possible as we tune up for finals football.  I look forward to a big crowd on Saturday.

Finally, the club will be holding its Best & Fairest presentation at Leonda on Thursday 28 September.  We would love as many family and supporters as possible to join us there.  Tickets can be purchased through the website.

Go Wellers,

Seniors vs Marcellin

The second last regular season game of 2023 saw the senior men’s side take on Marcellin away, in ideal football conditions. Having just scraped through with the 4 points in our first encounter, we knew we would be in for another tough day against a fit opposition.

We welcomed back into the team Andrew Parker and Harry Veitch from injury and holidays, as well as Caleb Finlayson, Liam Thomas and Sam Veitch back from the U19s.

The first quarter set the tone for the day, with some fast, flowing football in both direction which saw several momentum changes. Some great work across half forward from Lachie Powell and Harry Laukens saw us start to pull away, however 2 late goals from Marcellin reduced the qtr time margin to 4 points – 25 to 21.

The back and forth continued into the second quarter with neither team able to get on top and score with much freedom. Our backline were superb in restricting Marcellin’s freedom up forward. Kel Percy and Tom Oliver dominated in the air while Holds, Dal, Deevy, Parks and Westy were everywhere at ground level, repeatedly rebounding from our defensive 50. Thanks to this good work, Camberwell extended its lead to 14 points at half time, 42 to 28.

As the game wore on, our midfield and forward line gradually worked their way on top, and the scoring started to come more freely. Gussy and LT were giving the mids first use from the ruck and allowing us some quick forward entries. Jimmy Allenwas again superb in his last game before an overseas break, and he was well supported by the entire midfield group. Jay Kennedy-Harris put on a show up forward, ending the day with 5 goals and a BOG performance.

Camberwell would eventually end the day as comfortable victors: 91-42, a score which does not reflect what a tough and close game it was. We have now secured the minor premiership with 1 round to go which is extremely pleasing. The challenge now is to hit our best form running into the final’s series and we have an excellent chance to test ourselves at GBO in round 18 against an in-form and possible finals opponent in Parkdale.
