Round 15 Match Report

Friday 11 August 2023

The Senior men’s teams returned to action at Hampton, and both came away with good wins.

Despite some inaccuracy in front of goal, the Reserves overcame an 18-point halftime deficit to get up by 10 points.  With three rounds remaining we are sitting just outside the top four, with games against the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams to come.  Our destiny is certainly in our own hands.

The Seniors played a scintillating first-half of football and led by 51 points at half-time, with the final margin a comfortable 57 points.  We remain on top of the ladder, with a huge game against third-placed Ivanhoe at home this week.  A win would guarantee a birth in the second semi final.

The Women smacked Hawthorn AFC by 58 points, creating 28 shots at goal in the process.  We should approach the last game of the season against Old Melburnians with plenty of confidence.

With players returning from injury and overseas travel the Under 19’s fielded a very strong side, and were duly rewarded with a 10-goal win.  We remain second on the ladder and have a big chance to progress deep into the finals.

Our Third XVIII took on the undefeated Richmond AFC side at GBO in beautiful Saturday morning conditions.  The boys put up a great fight in a high standard game, eventually falling short by three goals.  We will be looking to finish the season strongly with a win against Marcellin this week.

This weekend the Senior men’s teams play host to Old Ivanhoe, the women meet Old Melburnians at Elstenwick Park at 11.40am, the Under 19’s play at Parkside under lights Friday evening, and the Thirds visit Marcellin at 11.40am.

It will be a massive day for the club this Saturday, with the Wellsmen hosting the Significant Premierships Anniversaries Lunch.  With over 100 attendees it looks like being a ball-tearer.  I can’t wait for the support our teams will get this weekend.

Go Wellers,

Mens Seniors vs Hampton Rovers

Our boys fresh from another footy free weekend, were drawn to meet Hampton Rovers down at Bluff Road. Arriving to see the sun shining and the ground in magnificent condition and enjoying the return of our intrepid overseas travellers, team Captain Gus Milham, Riley Verbi, Kell Percy and Harry McColl, the team has definitely taken on the appearance of a near full strength outfit. Added to that, we saw Sam Murphy return from injury and Tom Oliver from a well-earned break.

The enthusiasm pre-match was high, and the group was certainly pleased to have all mentioned back in the fold. Over recent weeks, Hampton have shown considerable form improvement, including a 40-point demolition of our archrival Old Ivanhoe, and we were all very aware that they would be an opponent not to be underestimated.

The game got underway at a fast pace with both teams striving to put heat on the footy and getting it moving forward to advantage. The Wellers were the more effective team kicking 5 goals, with no one forward standing out, but we also managed to kick behinds as well which was a slightly disappointing return from 13 Inside 50 entries, combined with 9 forward 50 marks. Hampton would have been concerned at the speed in which the ball entered their defensive area, but they were still able to conjure up a couple of goals to make the scoreline appear respectable.

‘Do Better’ was the Coach’s call at the break and do better the boys did. Playing with the luxury of having Riley V as a deep forward, he conjured up a couple of magnificent goals scored from marks, but of equal importance was his work in the goal assist department as well, by setting up the play for his team mates to put the finishing touches on. Benny Hart was another who found the ‘big sticks’  twice as well and before we knew it we had scored 6 to their 1, taking the half time lead of 51 points.

Our third quarter was marred by inaccuracy in front of goal with a number of players missing set shots, all from highly gettable distances and angles. Centre bounce clearances for the quarter ran at 5/0 our way, but unfortunately, we didn’t always capitalize on the advantage presented. Whilst Hampton was able to manage one goal in the quarter, they did improve the speed and use of the ball and were regularly able to scythe their way through the corridor. Fortunately, our ‘Back 7’ were resolute in their defensive mindset, with Will Dalrymple & Josh Holding marking everything that came their way, repelling numerous Hampton forward forays.

We went into the final break with a 63 point lead, and the aim was to build on this. Whilst a solid 57 point win was the final result, it may have looked to some that the boys had put the ‘cue in the rack’, however to Hampton’s great credit, they kept coming at us all afternoon, playing with a number of U19s in the team, they showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons.

Well done to all involved, it was fantastic that the ‘travellers’ performed the way they did, fighting off jet lag and helping to get us over the line, with another win to put us 6 points ahead of Ivanhoe and PEGS, at this stage of the season.

Well done to Jimmy Allen who produced another 30 plus possession game for the third week in a row. He has stood up magnificently in the absence of others and led by example, as we all know Jimmy is capable of.

Back to GBO next week for a rematch with Old Ivanhoe who will be striving to shore up a Top 2 spot on the ladder by season’s end (as are we). With a large Premiership Lunch celebration planned, we are anticipating a massive turnout to watch this match and to cheer the boys on. Well done Alex Dance from the Wellsmen Support Group on your efforts to encourage past players to get back to the Club and to enjoy rekindling old friendships from days past.

Thirds vs Richmond Central

When history is written by the victor the words pour from the pen with ease, however as I report a defeat my eloquence feels the friction of rust as it’s scraped from steel. With a final score of 53 -35 old Camberwell cemented themselves outside the top 4 and solidified their absence in the final march home.

Pre game conversations revolved around the requirement to remove the memories of a slaughter that had once occurred. Today was different, today was not like the last for today the team was together and should be ready to produce a presence primarily of fear and secondarily of class.

As the game commenced, Oscar Anderson and James Smith both rotated ruck and showed that white men can in fact jump! While Richmond may have established themselves previously as a side that sets up well and shocks the senses with their composure, Old Camberwell had infected their minds and a sense of caution was witnessed. This caution allowed an arm wrestle from the midfield and opportunities for Alex Mackenzie to show that while you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, sometimes they are not needed. His presence in the forward line was one that brought ease and support to the mind, like a father who tentatively watches his son navigate through the journey of life.

Samuel Cooper displayed the grace of an all knowing elder who through years of nourishing the tormented could calculate the core problems and seek to resolve. As the seconds ticked down to half time the arm wrestle had continued and the difference on the board displayed only 5. Knowing full well this was our game to win, Matthew Cottrell showed vigor and poise as without rest played in the midfield. Harry Rice decided to add a bit of spice to game with repeated key possessions and efficient impacts on the game. Many men often wonder who is this Harrison with his peculiar wit and articulation of the English language! Question him at your peril for on this suitable Saturday he showed an excellence that in another period of time may have him crowned as royalty.

As the third quarter clock began it’s descent to 0, the intense pressure all game finally broke, like the radius and ulna of an individual who had not kept up with his calcium intake. Richmond succeeded in scoring three consecutive goals. Despite the looming loss, spirits were high and every man still had belief that victory could be attained. Liam Mouat protected the ball and prevented the continuity of momentum for the opposition. A tear was brought to my eye as I watched the red hair fly and prevent a penetrating attack. It was a thing of beauty, it was an image only depicted in my dreams, it was artistic defensive football.

While the final score concluded in a similar margin to the third break, names of Jeremie Alexeyeff, Cameron Martin, and Carson Howard should be awarded their notable efforts. They played with attention and style that was not pretty or beautiful, it was art, and art is supposed to make you feel something!

Additional recruits of Timothy Howard (Carson’s brother), Kevin Huang, Tom Swallows and Jye McCormack should be lauded with praise for their willingness to show up and play with a group of whom they were unfamiliar. I note that as the siren sounds each week the thirds football club accepts all and marches with the same goal in mind. For that I ask no more.
