Round 14 Match Report

Thursday 03 August 2023

With the Senior men’s teams having a bye on the weekend it was a good opportunity to go and watch our other teams battle it out.

On a brilliantly sunny Saturday afternoon at GBO I watched our Women give their all against Marcellin.  It was an entertaining game, but ultimately, we went down by 25 points.

Our Under 19’s had a fantastic win over top of the ladder Carey, which keeps us firmly entrenched in the top four.  It was great to see a number of the Unders who had been playing in our senior side fit seamlessly back into the Under 19’s and play a pivotal role.

Our Third XVIII also benefitted from the senior team byes, regaining several players.  It showed in the result, being a win by 117 points, which keeps our finals hope alive.

This weekend the Senior men’s teams travel to Hampton, the Women meet Hawthorn AFC away at 9.20am, the Under 19’s take on University Blacks at University at 9.20am, and the Thirds host Richmond AFC at 11.40am.

On a sad note, we lost a great Old Camberwell person last week, Richard Clark.  Richard and his partner, Sue Mullett, ran the canteen for many years, and were regulars around the club.  Their son, Andrew Clark, is a member of the 2010’s Team of the Decade.  Our heartfelt condolences go to Sue, Andrew, and the rest of the Clark family.

The Club’s Presentation Night will be held on the evening of Thursday 28 September – the night before a public holiday, so no excuses for having to work the next day!  It will be held at Leonda and it would be great to see as many parents of players and club supporters as possible.  Finger food, drinks, and plenty of music to accompany the awards promise to make it a great night.  Tickets can be purchased via the club’s website.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Go Wellers,

Gavin Powell
President

Thirds vs Hampton Rovers

Saturday commenced with no cloud in the sky to shade the scenes that would unfold. A final score of 171-53 would tally a truly tenacious affair where ressies and thirds would coexist as Palestine and Israel one day hope.

Old Hampton threw together a team that can only be described as…. Fatherly, a stark contrast to the thirds who had supplemented their side with a younger more athletic reserve of men. And while the boundary lines were parallel the teams were anything but.

The opening quarter was much like the remaining three, dominant displays in the centre with James Smith and Zach Herbstreit winning in a manner that would make Bart Cummings proud. Timothy Heavey had clearly taken his horses to the glue factory earlier that morning as his hands stuck to the ball in a repeated affair. Tom Nicholson bolstered the backline with Cohen Fraser however due to the inability of the opposition, they pushed further up the play and rotated around to feel the leather like a cobbler during his daily preparations.

Sam Cooper showed his talents on wing, being able to slow down time and make fools of his opposition, and while fools are the meek that shall inherit the earth, Samuel was looking for no such bequeathment. The Lachlan duo of Weinlich and Appleby kicked a collective multiple of successive scores higher than 10, across the board there were 11 individual goal scorers, one more and they could be classed as the 12 disciples, yours truly being the most notable 13th attendee at this last supper…. New recruit Tom Swallows gulped a few goals and Angus Warburton even managed to have his time in the limelight moving off his position in back flank and making a major. Matthew Cottrell cannot go unmentioned with his ability to stay behind the play and establish a strategy that was destined to succeed.

In all it was a game that made coaching easy, mainly as many men did not play their positions and instead opted to rely on instincts and look only for the large upright white posts. Benjamin Kimmit could not be classed as one of these men as his manipulated the ball with manoeuvres that would move a man over, if only Jamie Steverlynck got the memo and angled his off the ground volley with more accuracy.

Congrats to all on the win, let’s continue our run home against Richmond and Marcellin and scrape through to finals.
