Round 6 Review

Wednesday 19 May 2021

Crickey, what a weekend! I am shattered, as I expect  many of you are after our 1st Super Saturday. But it was worth every minute. It was simply fantastic to see so many Wellers brave the icy May conditions and join us in one way or another on Saturday.

Our first Club function in the pavilion for over 20 months was a sell out! On the Tuesday leading into Super Saturday, we’d sold 44 Brunch tickets and we were delighted. Come 8am Saturday morning and that figure was 77, rising to 84 after several were keen to join on the day and who could blame them. It was wonderful to have two of our three Club Legends in attendance in Bryan Horskins and Alan Mitchell. Ken Schwab was unable to make it but he’s been down recently, as always, helping around the Club.

It was brilliant to see so many generations of the club together, from the 60s right through to the present day. Two of our new players, Gus Milham and Louise Zhang, shared their impressions on the club and footy as guests tucked into hot paninis and fresh, barista coffee courtesy of Daniel Dick’s Nigel Café. A huge thanks to all our helps on the day – Lisa Powell, Sue Oliver, Karen Taverner, Jacquie Chirgwin, Di Kyriacou along with Committee members Carole Anjou, Katherine Bithavas, Craig Sampson and Bec Kertes. Thanks again to Bryan Horskins for providing the new 60 Season Merlot and Chardonnay! Big thanks also to my son Noah and daughter Elina who mucked in and helped over the entire day, needing a few small bribes along the way! It was a superb team effort.

Sensational to also see a large group of past players including Greg Tolson, James Way, Aaron Hillier and their partners and kids enjoying the grassy banks of GBO throughout the course of the afternoon. It’s hard to remember a day when we had such great support for our players and the club.

Our Women and Men rose to the occasion and while a narrow defeat in the Men’s Ressies prevented a Super Saturday, clean sweep President’s Round (so Simmo tells me), some gutsy, good footy was played and fantastic to see our Women’s Reserves notch up their first win for the season.

Thanks to everyone for making the day such a special one for OCGAFC. We’ll catch our breath and looking forward to updating you with shortly.

Go Wells.
