Round 11 Review

Monday 28 June 2021

As the early sun eagerly burnt off Saturday’s early morning dew on the GBO, we pinched ourselves to make sure the return to GBO was real. With the lead in time tight, we decided late Thursday to welcome supporters and players back with a BBQ under our magnificent, new marquees. John Lagzdins, one of our many incredible volunteers and a current Committee member, had applied for and successful won a grant for the marquees earlier this year. They have come up an absolute treat! Thank-you John.

It was wonderful to be back and yet again, the Unders and Thirds kicked off Saturday in stirring fashion, recording two hard fought wins against spirited opposition and our Men’s Seniors and Reserves maintained their winning ways on our home deck.  While all our teams had plenty to play for, our Senior Womenwere taking on fellow finals contenders Beaumaris across town.  It would end in a narrow loss for our sensational Wellswomen and I know how gutted they’ll be but this team has played fantastic football all season and unfortunately been on the wrong end of several tight games. Our Women’s football program is one of the best in the Amateurs and we play an exciting brand of football combined with a lot of fun. We’re super proud of all our women players and wish them every success for the rest of the season. OneWellers! We play top of the table Melbourne Uni this Saturday AT HOME and it would be great to have as many supporters there as possible alongside some travelling support for all our teams.

Thank you again for all our new members and fantastic to see Mark Adamson (2 memberships at once!), Duncan Maccallum, Alex Beveridge and Andrew Clarke (all the way from the UK) sign up over the last week. Your support goes a long way and it’s our goal to continue to grow our membership base for our future security. Details are below if you feel like joining us now and for the future.

On the theme of helpers and volunteers, thank you for those who have recently put their hands up to assist us on game days. It is hugely appreciated. I know it’s a long way off as we’re over halfway through the season, we are looking to further bolster our volunteers for 2022. I’ll publish a list soon of specific things but we are looking for help as part of our treasury team with Alex Vickery and football operations team with Andrew Romanin. Please contact me directly on 0499 333 571 at any stage if you think it’s worth a conversation.

Take care and Go Wells.
