It really is hard to believe we’re back playing footy at Old Camberwell! And how good does it feel? Bloody awesome if you don’t mind me saying. Both ovals were as lush and green as we’ve ever seen, the clubrooms were actually open and it was sensational to see old faces and new back at Gordon Barnard.
It will be impossible to thank everyone who has helped us get to this point. All 127 amazing supporters who joined our Future Footy Festival in 2020, the coaches and players who provided such incredible support to each other and our community and our amazing committee who not only responded in our time of need but went well beyond the call of duty for OCGAFC. A massive thank you to everyone. Now let’s enjoy the season together in the knowledge that things will change, we’ll be ready, and we’ll be stronger whatever happens.
Firstly, please read the match reports and get to know our players. They are brilliant young women and men you’d be proud of both on and off the field. With the VAFA’s decision to stop production of the VAFA record, our website becomes an even more valuable resource for you to follow our teams, results and highlights.
For this week’s newsletter, I am challenged with saying some of the biggest thankyous the Club will ever make. Trust me, we will thank them again over the course of the year as in no way will I do them justice here.
Firstly, after nearly two decades of voluntary service behind the Canteen, Sue Mullett and Richard Clarke will be stepping down from their roles this year. Sue has organised and run the Canteen alongside Richard with great aplomb and warmth and the time is right to hand it on. Typically, Sue has offered to help out when she can but the running of the Canteen will now pass to another dynamo, Katherine Bithavas for now as we plan for the future. On behalf of everyone at the Club, a huge, heartfelt thank you to Sue and Richard for their outstanding contributions. Pleasingly, we know we’ll continue to see them at games and look forward to serving them next time around.
Secondly, after over three decades, that’s right, three decades, Warren Earl/Wearly has decided the time is right to hang up the boots behind the Bar. What can I say that goes close to encapsulating that contribution? Wearly has been honoured on many occasions already and would hate any fuss so I will try and keep it simple. Football clubs DO NOT EXIST without people like Wearly and OCGAFC will be forever indebted to all you’ve done. There is however a silver lining here. Wearly will still be involved with the club but very much on the other side of the Bar as he watches the games, updates the live scores on match days, advises on how things are done and keeps our archives spotless as usual.
I’ll wrap up on two critical points.
1. VOLUNTEERING AT OLD CAMBERWELL
It is impossible to replace people like Wearly, Sue or Richard and we know this. Our motto moving forward is Many Hands Make Light Work when it comes to our volunteers. The more people we have who can help, the lighter the commitment. Or so the theory goes. In short, we need your help. Please contact Katherine - 0424 345 605 or myself – 0499 333 571 if you think you can help in any way – help in the Canteen for 2 hours a few times a year, help with goal umpiring, do the scoreboard, bake some cakes for the after match – any and all help is welcome. We’ll publish a volunteer sign-up system next week with a breakdown of roles but we’d love to hear from you as well.
2. WELLSMEN GOLF DAY
This Friday 16th of April sees the return of the fantastic Wellsmen Golf Day at Kew Golf Club. We have 20 groups confirmed which takes us close to capacity. However, if you’re keen to join us for a drink afterwards, feel free to make your way to Kew Golf Club at 6pm. We’ll be announcing our 2021 Sponsors next week in the newsletter.
Don’t forget, check out the new website www.oldcamberwellfc.com.au and if you know someone who hasn’t signed up, let them know. Otherwise, follow us on Instagram at oldcamberwellfc or join the Facebook group at Old Camberwell Grammarians Amateur Football Club.
Looking forward to seeing you at a game soon.
Come on the Wells.
